OP (Original Poster) is a 30-year-old male whose father died last August 2023.
He struggled to deal with the loss of his dad. Apart from his death, he had to maintain the family business and make funeral arrangements while doing his best to keep his life from falling apart.
Somber Preparations
A week after OP’s father’s passing, he was at the funeral home with his father’s former partner, J, to arrange services.
Straight to Voicemail
During these funeral preparations, OP received a call from Aunt C—one of his father’s siblings. OP let it go to voicemail because he didn’t feel like talking to her.
OP noted that his aunt has a bad habit of making her voice sound “young and babyish” while at the same time talking in a “condescending manner.” He felt like she had the type of attitude where no matter what you said, she always believed she was in the right.
Bossy Message
When he found time, he listened to the voicemail that Aunt C had left him. Aunt C stated that she, her son, and his wife would be residing in his two guest bedrooms once they got off their flight.
Unwelcome Visitors
OP couldn’t believe how presumptuous his aunt was being. She hadn’t even asked if the guest bedrooms were still available.
After all, tons of family members came in from all over for the funeral. On top of that, OP noted that having guests over while he was in the throes of planning his father’s funeral would only add to his stress.
Terrible Help
During her stay, OP said that Aunt C did nothing but complain. Even though he’d made a reservation for her at a nearby hotel, she “made herself at home” in the guest bedroom.
On top of that, OP’s aunt refused to contribute any help in the funeral preparations. She stayed tucked away in the guest bedroom and busied herself with complaining about the heat, even though J and Uncle A—another one of his father’s siblings—made it a point to help OP out.
Time to Eat
The night before the funeral, a large gathering of OP’s family was at a restaurant. It was OP, Uncle A and his family, J, and then Aunt C and her son.
Where’s the Appetizer?
While the family awaited the appetizer, a fight broke out between J and Uncle A. They couldn’t agree on the catering of the funeral reception.
Breaking up the Fight
OP interjected in an attempt to get things to cool down before the fight escalated even more.
Aunt C then spoke up and told OP, in a very condescending voice, to “mind his own business.”
Angry as a Bull
OP said, “I’m not going to lie. I saw red.”
He couldn’t believe that she’d told him to mind his own business when he had just been trying to keep the peace.
Kicked to the Curb
OP had been dealing with a lot since his father’s death, and this had been the final straw.
He looked his aunt “dead in the eyes” and told her in a slow, calm voice full of barely contained rage, “I want you to get your s*** out of my house. You are no longer welcome.”
Standing Firm
OP thought that with Aunt C staying at his house as a guest, she’d show him more respect. But he soon learned that assumption was wrong.
His aunt met his angry gaze and said, “That’s not going to happen.”
Better Call an Uber Fast
If his aunt wouldn’t leave willingly, OP was ready to forcefully remove her.
He threatened to throw all her belongings out onto the lawn before she managed to return to his house. She had taken an Uber to the restaurant, so he knew he could easily beat her back home.
Ruined Appetite
OP then stormed out of the restaurant. He was no longer starving after the massive fight in a public space.
Helping Hands
He then called Aunt C’s son to let him know what had happened and that he’d made prior arrangements at a hotel to board his aunt. He gave her son all the necessary details to check her in and told him he wanted Aunt C out of his house immediately.
Tail Tucked Between Her Legs
Aunt C’s son arrived a few hours later with her in tow and collected her belongings.
OP noted that while her son and his wife talked to him, Aunt C avoided him like the plague. She simply brought her belongings out to the car and refused to talk to him for the remainder of that night and at the funeral the next day.
Coping With Grief
OP added that he knows that grief affects everyone differently and that stress can cause people to overreact and lash out at loved ones.
He now wonders if perhaps he “overdid it a bit.”
