She Forced Her Divorced Aunt to Move Out After Realizing She’s “Toxic.” Her Mom Accused Her of Being “Selfish” and “Petty,” but There’s No Room for Drama in Her Life!

Her aunt made their lives a living hell when she moved in with her and her parents. Now, she’s having a hard time kicking her out and won’t even give her deposit money back!

Thirty-year-old OP (Original Poster) has been financially supporting her family for the past 10 years. She’s single, lives with her parents, and is the one who pays the rent and utilities as her dad is retired.

OP has a sibling who moved to another country several years prior and has zero financial obligation toward their family.

A year before OP shared this story, she and her parents moved into a better apartment with enough space for a guest bedroom. Not long after, OP’s mother’s 58-year-old younger sister came to live with them.

When All the Divorces Made Sense

During that time, OP’s aunt was going through her fifth divorce and was extremely upset, so OP tried her best to accommodate her. However, OP eventually realized how “toxic” her mom’s sister is.

OP wrote, “She picks up fights with my father for no apparent reason, tries to turn my mother against my sibling, and has even had the gall to try and badmouth my father in front of me.”

Despite that, OP tried to be nice to her aunt and told her to stop making things difficult. OP even offered to pay for her therapy and rental deposit so she could move out.

OP said, “It backfired, big time.”

Everything Was Settled, but Then…

At the beginning of May 2023, OP and her parents started looking for an apartment her aunt could move into, and they soon found a nice unit. OP then deposited the required amount directly into her aunt’s account, per her request.

However, before the agreement was signed, the deal fell through. So, they started looking for another place, but nothing they found fit OP’s budget.

Money Gone, Money Done

In the middle of August, OP finally found a small apartment, which is within decent distance from her place. But upon mentioning it to her aunt, she said she couldn’t afford to move.

OP then asked her why and was told that she already spent the money OP gave her for the deposit.

OP noted, “Mind you, during this period, she made our lives a living hell. She would yell at my father, throw things in fits of anger, suddenly stop talking to us, and even pick up fights with our neighbors because their baby kept crying.”

Not a Chance

When OP brought up the money issue, they got into a huge fight. OP’s mother came to her and asked if her aunt could move into the guest bedroom permanently.

Of course, OP declined.

No Room for Complications

OP works two jobs and has a hectic schedule, so she can’t come home to fights and drama every other day. Aside from that, OP told her mom that she wanted the deposit money back.

But somehow, instead of being on her side, OP’s mother chose her aunt and accused her of being “selfish” and “petty.”

On the other hand, OP’s dad is an introvert who, instead of facing the problem, prefers to stay in his room the entire day. That means he won’t take a stand either, even though he has mentioned, more than once, that he doesn’t feel comfortable around OP’s aunt.

Against Her Decision

The day before OP posted on Reddit, she told her mom and aunt that she would pay the deposit straight to the new landlord and even help with the move the coming weekend.

Afterward, OP’s aunt started yelling at her and went inside her room. Her mom also decided to give her the silent treatment, which she had never done before.

Let the Plan Commence

Still, OP will continue her plan even if it will set her back for a while.

But she begs to answer the question, “Am I the a**hole in this situation?”

What People Have to Say

Redditors felt bad for OP as she couldn’t live her life the way she wanted because of her responsibilities.

The top commenter wrote, “Not the a**hole. I don’t know if it’s cultural, but you are not treating yourself very well. You are working two jobs to support others; your aunt is toxic and a thief, and your parents are not only not supportive of you in the matter or grateful, it seems, for your sacrifices, your mom has the audacity to give you the silent treatment. I wish you’d get your own place and let them support themselves and the aunt or the other sibling take a turn. You only get one life.”

Another person added, “OP is missing out on life experiences, maybe dating and friendships, because she’s working to pick up the slack. Surely, her parents could do something to earn money? The aunt doesn’t serve her generosity.”

You’re the Boss

OP is the only reason her parents and even her aunt, for that matter, are living so well. People are proud of OP for standing up for herself and not letting people step on her.

A Redditor wrote, “You pay the bills, so they live with you. So you get to decide who lives there. Not them. Your house, your rules. I am glad you’ve decided not to be a doormat anymore. Cancel everything. Find your own place, stop paying for any of them, and let the three of them figure it out. They have abused your goodness long enough. Not the a**hole.”

What are your opinions on OP’s situation? Do you think she was wrong for wanting her aunt out of her apartment?
