His Parents Demanded He Pay Them Rent on Top of Securing Their Family’s Groceries, Cooking, and Doing Laundry. He Refused and Moved Out. Now They Say He Screwed Them Over!

This Redditor has his share of responsibilities in the family and believes what was assigned to him was fair. However, everything changed when he was also demanded to pay his parents rent!

The Hustle and Bustle

OP (Original Poster) is 23, the oldest of five siblings, and a full-time student. Apart from this, OP also works part-time in his field of choice.

However, when he graduates and gets his degree, his employer will hire him for a full-time position. He wrote, “I make enough from part-time to pay for school and put money aside.”

His younger siblings’ ages range from 10 to 20, and their parents work full-time. He shared, “My dad works very long hours, and my mom works nine to five at a hard job.”

Because of this, OP’s taken on many responsibilities in keeping “everything running in the house.”

His Chores

OP does the grocery shopping and the laundry; he also makes dinner and lunch to go for the family. Additionally, he ensures all his siblings do their part in the household chores.

He clarified, “All the chores were split fairly. I wasn’t doing any more than anyone else. I thought it was fair.”

More and More Responsibilities

However, OP’s contributions to the household don’t stop there.

For example, his youngest brother feeds and walks the dogs. So, OP ensures dog food is in the storage and poop bags on the leash.

Rewarding Himself

After all the hard work he has to do around the house and at work, OP decided to gift himself a PS5 over Christmas.

He wrote, “The rest of my family is still using a shared PS4. I keep mine in my room, and I do not share.”

Fielding Complaints

After some time, OP’s parents started “fielding complaints” from his brother—the eldest out of the rest of the four—about how he made “so much money” and “doesn’t share” the things he bought for himself. OP agreed with this, as he believed his purchases were his rewards for himself, like the PS5.

Unfair Contribution?

So, OP’s parents sat him down for a conversation where they brought up this issue. OP, however, pointed out how much of the household work he did.

However, for his parents, it wasn’t enough; they said it “wasn’t fair” that OP was earning so much money without contributing. He wrote, “They told me how much they expected from me.”

Running the Numbers Through His Head

After their conversation, OP went to his room and “did the math.”

He shared, “If I gave them what they wanted, I would have about $800 a month left over. If I dropped a couple of classes next semester, I could go to almost full-time hours with my employer, and it would only be one more year until I graduated with my second degree.”

The Decision Has Been Made!

OP thought things through and ultimately decided he could afford his own place. If he does this, he’d have “way more” free time and disposable income.

So, he immediately packed up and moved out.

Leaving the Life He’s Always Known

OP packed everything he owned, and it all fit into his car. He stayed at an Airbnb for two weeks until he could get everything sorted regarding his own apartment, school, and work.

He added, “I’m not going to lie; I may have gone a little overboard on Tinder. I couldn’t have women over to my parents’ house.”

New Routine

When OP wrote this story, he just moved into his apartment. He’s staying as a part-time employee until he finishes his current semester.

He’ll then work full-time over the summer and will have a lighter class load and more work hours in the fall.

New Responsibilities on His Brother’s Shoulders

As the next oldest sibling, OP’s brother had been tasked by their parents to do everything OP used to do. Then, his initial responsibilities and chores were split between the other three.

OP wrote, “They are all p***** at me for moving out.”

Left in the Lurch

But OP’s siblings aren’t the only ones upset at him; his parents felt he “left them in the lurch.” His siblings are also furious since they all have “more chores.”

OP wrote, “My oldest brother is especially salty because he has no free time to see his girlfriend, and she isn’t allowed in the house when my parents aren’t home.”

The Price of Freedom

On the flip side, OP is enjoying all the free time he now has. He even bought himself a plant from IKEA!

But still, he wrote, “I feel bad for screwing them all over, but it didn’t make sense for me to do all that work and pay rent on top.”

What Redditors Think of the Issue

Redditors congratulated OP for his newfound freedom.

One said, “It’s your life; you’re an adult. I say good for you. You seem headed in a good direction.”

“Not the a**hole, OP. Do what’s best for you. As long as you aren’t overextending yourself, enjoy having your own place,” wrote another user.

Lesson Learned

Others also reassured OP, saying he probably didn’t inconvenience his parents more than he believed he did. More than that, his brother learned his lesson the hard way!

A woman said, “I think it hurts the parents less than OP thinks. They had a backup in OP’s brother, and the brother learned a lesson about coveting other people’s things.”

Another person shared, “Brother wanted OP’s PlayStation and got his chores instead. Best lesson ever.”

Do you think OP did the right thing by moving out? What do you have to say to his brother?
