He Refused to Give His Greedy Relatives the Inheritance He Received From His Grandpa. They Think It’s Unfair, but They’re Money-Hungry People Who Didn’t Care About Their Dad

This Redditor lost his grandfather to cancer. Now his relatives are hounding him and his cousins for a cut of his estate, but he doesn’t want to give in!

A Deadly Case

OP’s (Original Poster) grandfather suffered from stage 4 lumbar cancer and was in hospice care for the last weeks of his life.

Sadly, OP couldn’t say that his family was united in caring for his sick grandpa. He wrote, “My family was mostly not involved to hostile during this.”

They found out about OP’s grandpa’s cancer two years ago. Upon breaking the news, OP’s family started acting like “lunatics.”

But he said it was not in the way of concerned family members. OP said they were more like “performative a**holes.”

Knives Out

OP compared their family situation to the movie, Knives Out.

He wrote, “Every conversation, they brought up the will and asked him to give them their share to avoid paying inheritance tax.”

Later, OP’s grandpa’s cancer progressed. He decided he didn’t want any other medical interventions and wanted to live his last moments peacefully.

Panicking Family

Because OP’s grandpa had yet to make “adjustments” to the will, his family members pushed for a court order for further treatment. They wanted their dad to change the will first before he died!

OP added, “While that was happening, my aunt moved herself into the house. My cousin later told me it was so she could make claims on it after he was gone.”

Too Tired to Fight

OP’s aunt wanted to appear as if she cared for her dad so the inheritance would be in her favor. OP said she wasn’t a medical professional, but she made OP’s grandpa go keto and paleo.

His grandfather, on the other hand, was too weak to fight her on this, so he just agreed.

Ticking Off His Bucket List

OP and his cousins didn’t want to cage their grandfather in, so they would go over and take him out. However, instead of taking him to parks, they would bring him to see horses, watch movies in the cinema, drink and eat in pubs, and more.

He wrote, “Basically, he had a bucket list, and we would sneak him out to do that. We would also sneak in foods he wanted.”

One Last Toast

The night before their grandfather went into hospice care, OP and his cousins had a few glasses of whiskey with him; they even smoked a cigar! Their grandfather then told them that they were the sole inheritors of his estate and their oldest cousin would be the executor.

OP shared, “He asked us not to say anything. He just needed us to sign something.”

The Secret’s Out

A week later, OP’s grandfather passed away. Because he already died, the family had been called so they could discuss the will and OP’s grandfather’s inheritance.

It was then that OP’s parents and his cousins’ parents found out what they would get.

Money-Hungry Relatives

OP’s parents and other relatives learned they were only getting $5,000 each and were absolutely furious. He said, “All hell broke lose!”

Their parents are “really mad” at OP and his cousins.

You’re on Your Own

Since then, they’ve been kicked out. They also threatened to cut off contact if OP and his cousins “don’t do the right thing and give them what’s theirs.”

So, OP asked, “Are we the a**holes for not telling them about anything and not giving them their ‘share?’” He noted that he wasn’t asking for legal advice, as they already have a lawyer; what they need is some perspective on the morality of things.

The Community’s Take on the Matter

For users, there is no question about morality in this story. OP’s parents and his aunts and uncles are entitled and greedy.

“What morals? Sounds more like entitlement on the part of his children to me. Your grandfather wanted his money to benefit the relatives who really cared for him, which is obviously his grandchildren, not his children. That was his right,” wrote a top commenter.

This person also shared a snippet of another Reddit post shared in the community and noted that it was similar to what OP was going through. He said, “There was a post here from a man who helped his friend care for his grandpa almost every single day for quite a while. Turned out the old man had a point system keeping track of how often his various relatives visited him and helped him out. When the will was read, the friend got the bulk of the estate, OP got a sizeable amount, and everyone else got a pittance. As they deserved. Your relatives don’t deserve a share other than what was left to them, either. Not the a**hole.”

Respect His Wishes

For other users, what would be immoral is for OP to go against his grandfather’s final wish.

One user wrote, “It would be immoral for you to go against his wishes. How do you think he would feel? He chose to portion it out how he portioned it out. Don’t let other family members pressure you into going against that. Think of it as him literally physically handing out his things in person. Not the a**hole.”

Greedy Relatives

Some also called OP’s relatives out for being money-hungry individuals who didn’t even care about their father while he was suffering.

“What would have been moral is if your family had actually cared about him instead of just his money. They would have been doing what you and your cousins did all along. That would have been the moral thing to do. You didn’t lie by keeping what you knew from your family; you honored his wish,” said one Redditor.

Another commented, “Your grandpa gave them ‘what’s theirs.’ Do not fret; this is what he wanted, and it was his right to dispose of his estate as he saw fit. They have no moral leg to stand on, either.”

Do you think OP’s relatives deserve more? What advice would you give OP?
