A Bitter Divorce
OP (Original Poster) prefaced his story by saying that his mom and dad got a “bitter divorce” right after he was born. Afterward, his mom got full custody of him and his older brother.
Not an Absentee Dad
Fortunately, OP’s dad was always there for them. They’d see him on the weekends and spend most of the holidays with him.
A Difficult Time
When OP turned 18, his dad sadly passed away. OP and his brother didn’t have time to understand what was happening.
He said, “Even though my brother and I were fairly young, we were legally considered adults in my country, and we had to deal with all the paperwork, identifying the body, police investigation, etc.”
Multiple Helping Hands
Because of how hard it was for OP and his brother, after the funeral, OP’s mom and her brothers “offered to help” by cleaning his dad’s house, dealing with the landlord, and more.
False Comfort
In the beginning, everything felt like a huge relief. However, things changed when OP learned that his mom started selling and giving away all of his dad’s stuff “like it was nothing.”
Destroying His Legacy
OP’s mom kept the money from the things she sold and never gave OP and his brother a cent. She even melted a gold bracelet with his dad’s name engraved to make herself a ring and a necklace.
A Selfish Comeback
When they found out, OP and his brother were absolutely livid! Instead of feeling sorry for what she had done, she just hit them back with responses like, “I have supported you your whole life!”
Long Road to Financial Freedom
After everything, OP and his brother moved out to attend college. During this time, they tried to fix everything related to their dad’s estate and to put it simply, it was nothing short of a nightmare.
OP wrote, “We spent two years trying to collect my dad’s inheritance, and it was a freaking nightmare—endless paperwork and waiting.”
Mom’s Selfish Demands
Finally, the two got their inheritance. But little did they know that the drama wasn’t over yet.
When their mom found out about it, she demanded OP give all the money to her. Or, at the very least, she wanted OP to split the money into three so she could get one-third of the estate.
You’re Out of Luck
OP and his brother immediately and firmly refused. They believed their mom had no right to the estate.
Apart from that, though, OP needed the money for his education. He shared, “My uncle has been paying for my tuition so far.”
Greedy and Ungrateful!
OP’s mom didn’t take this news well. She got “really angry” and accused OP and his brother of being “ungrateful.”
She said she had always supported them, and they were greedy for not being willing to share the money. OP’s mom also refused to talk to them for a couple of months after this happened.
