This Redditor never had a good relationship with his dad, but he tried to make up for his shortcomings by leaving him almost everything he had. Now his half-siblings are hounding him for money!
His Dad’s Moral Compass

OP (Original Poster) never had a good relationship with his dad, but he doesn’t label him a bad person. However, he couldn’t say he was a good man either.
He said, “He stepped out on his wife and hooked up with my mom once—she didn’t have a clue he was married. Then I was born, but he had no idea.”
Tracking Him Down

Because it was a one-night stand, it took OP’s mom six to seven years to track his dad down. When she did, his dad’s wife found out about him cheating, and they almost divorced!
However, they ultimately decided to stay together, and OP’s dad told him he wanted to be part of his life.
Not Working

OP shared that his dad would come around “all the time,” take him out, and help his mom financially. This went on for a few years, and his dad tried to include him in stuff he’d do with his half-siblings, but it wasn’t working.
He wrote, “They didn’t like me, so they bullied me a lot. I met his wife a few times, and she was just nasty and mean. So after that, he stopped trying and went back to us doing our separate thing.”
14 Going On 15

When OP was 14, his dad started to try reaching out again, but everything that had happened with him and his mom was “still causing problems in their marriage.”
This didn’t last long either because when OP turned 15, his dad stopped coming around again.
Little to No Contact

They didn’t go no contact, but they only talked a few times over the years. His dad then finally got a divorce in the end.
Even so, he never reached out to OP, even when he tried.
Letter Filled With Regrets

OP’s dad passed away before this story was posted. He was left with a letter apologizing for “how he was.”
His dad also said he was too ashamed to try working things out after being out of touch for so long.
Money Can’t Make Up for It

In the letter, OP’s father told him he understood that money could never make up for all his shortcomings, but he still wanted OP to accept the inheritance he was leaving him,
OP shared, “I was speechless. He left a small portion for my half-siblings, but in his will, most of his money is to go to me.”
Choosing His Affair Child

His half-siblings are absolutely furious. They’re unhappy about their dad’s choice because he “barely left them with anything.”
Additionally, it was not enough for them. They said OP owed them the money for “all the trouble this caused in their lives.”
It’s a Life-Changing Amount

However, for OP, the inheritance he received would change his life for the better.
He said, “It could really help with so much. Like actually finishing my degree, putting a down payment on a decent house, and putting the rest in a retirement fund or something.”
Hounding Him for the Money

Sadly, his half-siblings and their mom wouldn’t let it go. He said they were “coming down hard and won’t stop with the messages.”
Pestering Him

They keep bullying OP into giving up the money, saying he owed it to them since “they were his kids, too.”
OP said, “Don’t even wanna repeat what they said ‘cause it makes me feel like s***.”
A Slap in the Face

OP feels for his half-siblings. He understood they were still mad about their dad cheating and “breaking up the family.”
He shared that this whole thing probably felt like “another slap in the face” to them.
Different Thoughts

Making a decision is hard for OP. On the one hand, he wants to use the money for his life.
But he also understood that he was their dad’s “affair child,” and he was one of the reasons that their family “fell apart.” He said, “I can see why, to them, it feels like I owe them after everything.”
Redditors’ Thoughts and Suggestions

Redditors assured OP that keeping the money wasn’t wrong.
A top commenter wrote, “Not the a**hole. You owe them literally nothing.” Another commented, “OP’s dad knew what he was doing. He left them some money, so they can’t complain about it not being enough unless they show their true colors by whining and being bratty.”
Not the Kids’ Fault

On the other hand, some understood OP’s half-siblings’ feelings. Even so, they said OP’s not the a**hole.
“I don’t think they’re wrong to be p*****. Their dad cheats on their mom, and ultimately, they get divorced, and then the cheating dad leaves his inheritance to the kid conceived by that. That must sting. OP isn’t an a**hole, though; it’s not their fault,” shared one user.
Another countered and said, “I agree it probably would hurt, but they were financially supported their whole lives, whereas it sounds like Dad only helped with money for a few years with OP. I wonder if Dad helped the half-siblings with university or other gifts later in life. This could just be OP getting his share at the end.”
What should OP do? Do you think giving his half-siblings a cut is fair?
