He’s not dead yet, but his siblings are already talking about what they’ll do to his building once he’s gone. Little did they know that a teenager is about to inherit it instead of them!
Preparing for the Inevitable
OP (Original Poster) is already 77 years old, and his health hasn’t been the greatest. He thinks he only has a few years left, so he’s been fixing his will early on before he eventually goes.
The Only Family He Has
Out of five siblings, OP is the oldest. He has three brothers and a sister.
The oldest one, aside from him, is 70 years old, and the youngest is 59. OP has minimal contact with them due to their huge differences in values.
One and Alone
Aside from that, OP doesn’t have any kids and has never been married.
An Old Man’s Property
But OP does have one thing: his small cafe where he serves drinks such as coffee, tea, non-alcoholic beverages, and more, and some small meals to go along with them. Above the cafe is the apartment where he lives.
OP owns the entire building, including the ground where it stands.
The Teenage Part-Timer
Three years prior, OP hired a part-timer named Lea, who is currently 19, to help out with the cafe. OP was only doing everything alone before she came.
Beyond Assistance
Lea has been a huge help and is enthusiastic about the work. She has lent a hand to OP many times, even outside her job.
The Grandchild He Never Had
Their bond has become quite great, and Lea often refers to OP as her “bonus grandpa.”
When Blood Is Not Thicker
Because OP’s connection with Lea is so much better than his with his siblings, he intends to leave the cafe, the apartment, and the land to her when he dies.
In Lea, He Trusts
OP knows Lea would take good care of the cafe, and it would also give her a good headstart by already having a place of her own.
OP said, “I will be sitting with a lawyer to arrange everything in regards to taxes as well.”
Upon His Death
However, in recent years, OP’s siblings have been discussing what they’d do with the building once OP is gone. They’ve thought of renting it out, letting their grandkids use it, or even selling it.
To Think Otherwise
OP’s sure his sibling will most definitely not be pleased if he leaves everything to Lea instead.
Now, he asks, “Would I be the a**hole for leaving my property to my employee in my will instead of to my siblings?”
People’s Pieces of Advice
Redditors suggested OP get some people to assist and protect Lea, as no one can ever really know what people might do regarding money.
The top commenter wrote, “You have a golden heart. But I want to point this out. You must assign, like a few people, a team to assist Lea with the law, the protection, and anything that relates. People could be awful, and especially when it comes to property as big as yours, anyone can harm a girl like Lea for their own profit.”
Another person agreed, saying, “People can turn into a special kind of a**hole when a little money is involved. The siblings are already making plans for the inheritance. They will definitely try and intimidate, harass, or, God knows what else, this young woman. She’ll need decent representation to defend herself.”
Clear and Concise
OP has to ensure there are no loopholes in his will and be clear on his wishes.
“Not the a**hole. Your stuff, your decision. Make sure that your lawyer is aware of the conflict with your siblings so that your will can be as ironclad as possible. Your siblings will dispute it, and Lea will not have funds to hire a lawyer to defend it unless it is written into the will that estate funds will be used to defend the will. I don’t know if that’s even a thing, but it sounds good. At the very least, I believe you should specifically mention in your will that you do not wish to leave anything to your siblings or other relatives. Best of luck to you,” someone commented.
Clarify Your Intentions
People think OP should tell his siblings about his plans so they could avoid future complications and problems that could directly affect Lea.
A Redditor wrote, “Not the a**hole. I admire your choice. But listen, I highly recommend you communicate this to your family before you die. They are likely to be angry, and I’m sure you’d rather not deal with that. But they are under the impression they’re getting it, and they will be surprised and angry whenever they find out they aren’t. If they get blindsided after you’re gone, they will take it out on her. Imagine them grilling her for how she tricked you into it or accusing her of taking advantage of you, opening a lawsuit to try to prove you weren’t of sound mind, etc. They may even stop by your business to harass her, badmouth her in the community, etc.”
The same person added, “Don’t make her bear the brunt of their ire. Make your wishes known and answer their questions while you’re alive. Tell them firmly it’s what you want, you’ve thought it through carefully, and your mind is made up. Just my two cents.”
What can you say? Do you think OP’s decision makes him the a**hole?
