Her husband died without even getting to renovate an old house he bought. Her stepdaughter has been living there rent-free, but she’ll ensure certain circumstances will force her to move out immediately!
An Archaic Abode
Before 33-year-old OP’s (Original Poster) late husband got ill, he bought an old house that he wanted to fix up. According to the realtor, it used to be a hunting lodge owned by a family that came from old money.
Over time, the place just fell into a bad condition.
Not the Wasteful Type
Her husband never meant to use the house as a primary residence but reasoned that it was the one purchase he wanted to make just because he could.
OP wrote, “His justification for the purchase was that he had grown up poor, and after he started making a lot of money, he had for the past few decades never spent much of it on luxuries for him or his family. He did not wear expensive clothes or drive expensive cars. His money only ever went to safe investments or to new businesses he was able to make a success.”
On the Brink of Decay
Compared to their other homes that came in perfect condition, the old house was obviously crumbling.
However, OP’s husband still bought it as his own little project.
One and the Other
Then, OP explained that throughout their six years of marriage, she has had a good relationship with one of her husband’s daughters. However, the other one has always been difficult to get along with.
Daddy Issues
Her husband’s daughter disliked her father’s stinginess toward her mother and their family. She also had a horrible boyfriend, who, by the time he was 32, already had 5 kids with 2 other women.
But she believed that after having her four-year-old daughter, her boyfriend would propose instead of leaving her. Unfortunately, he still left.
A Tenant or a Freeloader?
After getting dumped by her boyfriend, OP and her husband let her stepdaughter live in the old house for free. OP thought she would start paying rent, but because OP’s spouse got sick, he and his daughter never communicated well, and they were never able to establish any rules.
OP said, “But during the years she was in the house, it continued to deteriorate quickly.”
$100 Out of Millions?
When OP’s husband passed away, his assets were divided between OP and his nephew, and the rest were put in a trust for their four-year-old son.
Way before OP and her husband got together, his daughters were already allocated $100 each in his will. Initially, he intended to give everything to his nephew.
Pay Up!
Now that her husband’s gone, OP told her stepdaughter that she’s now required to pay $900 per month for her to live in 2 adjoining rooms upstairs and use the kitchen.
Her husband’s daughter said it was too difficult to do so, especially since she’s a single mom. But when OP pointed out that her baby’s dad was around spending money on dates but somehow couldn’t send support, she got furious.
Handling the Legalities
After a week of contact, OP handed things over to her lawyers, who went through all the necessary procedures to give proper notice to file for eviction. However, in their state, evictions take a long time.
OP wrote, “It’s been four months, and it’s clear my stepdaughter wants to fight it because she has no plan and below-average credit.”
Unlivable Home
Then, as luck would have it, she discovered something she could use against her stepdaughter. OP has someone who goes to the house’s common area for basic cleanup, and her stepdaughter claims that depression has made her unable to clean.
She noted, “We always knew the house was falling apart, but after getting somebody to inspect it, my agents told me this place could easily be condemned, and we wouldn’t have to wait for a proper eviction.”
Down-And-Out
Now, OP’s stepdaughter and her child are being immediately forced out of the house. With that, her husband’s daughter is furious and says she could have made do and that OP was leaving her “homeless.”
So, OP asked, “Am I the a**hole for going a legally permissible route and getting the house condemned? It always needed to be rehabbed, but now I’m rid of a problematic tenant.”
The Community’s Reactions
People are left confused, with questions left unanswered. Aside from that, Redditors pointed out that there were a lot of missing details in OP’s story.
A Redditor commented, “Why were his daughters only given $100 each? Even the one you got along with? Why did you, your son, and your nephew get everything? Why did your late husband and you allow the one daughter to move into a house that was so broken down? What are you going to do with that now condemned house?”
Another person said, “OP also doesn’t mention her late husband’s age or her stepdaughter’s age, but the stepdaughter’s boyfriend’s age is 32, and she’s 33. It’s giving me ‘I married someone with kids the same age as me’ vibes.”
Everything’s a Mess
There were a lot of details that OP didn’t share, which made it difficult for Redditors to declare whether OP was wrong or not.
A commenter wrote, “It sounds like there is a lot of missing information regarding why his daughters were left out of his will, but his nephew was included, especially when this guy had enough money to buy multiple homes. ‘Unlike our other homes that came in pristine condition.’ It sounds like there is a whole bunch of backstory that would probably make the entire family sound like a complete s*** show.”
“So, I am going to have to go with ‘everyone sucks here.’ And I will leave with one other note. Legal does not equal moral. ‘Am I the a**hole for going a legally permissible route and getting the house condemned?’ Just because something is legally permissible does not mean it is the right thing to do.” the same person said.
What’s the Setup?
Another confusing thing that Redditors noticed is how much OP charged her stepdaughter for rent and why it only included two rooms and access to the kitchen.
Someone wrote, “You’re the a**hole. Putting aside everything else, going from charging none to charging $900 a month for 2 rooms that should be condemned and access to a kitchen? Is there a bathroom included in that? Are there other people living in the house, and that’s why she doesn’t have full access to the whole place? If there are, what are they paying? And I’m assuming you’re kicking them out, too, with your nasty little plan?”
The same person added, “And why are you taunting her about her ex-boyfriend spending money? It has absolutely nothing to do with anything for as long as he’s not paying child support, so the only reason I can think of is to be as cruel as humanly possible.”
What can you say about OP’s decision? Was she wrong?
