This Redditor thought all was well during their weekend trip. However, he was surprised that the Airbnb host left him a bad review and an upsetting personal message! What could have caused this?
Wedding Getaway

OP (Original Post) and his girlfriend attended a friend’s wedding, which took place a few hours away from their home. So, they decided to get an Airbnb to be more comfortable; they could even bring their dog!
The Seemingly Perfect Airbnb

The couple found a place that allowed pets, left work early, and arrived late afternoon on the Friday before the wedding. Thirty minutes after they got there, their Airbnb host showed up to see how they were doing.
OP noted that their dog was on the porch at this time.
You Brought a Dog?

OP, his girlfriend, and the Airbnb host made small talk, and the host mentioned that the couple didn’t indicate that they were bringing a dog in their booking.
For OP, it was an honest mistake. He felt terrible and said, “I’d never lie to someone to get out of paying the pet fee.”
We Can Pay For It

OP immediately offered to pay the $25 fee on the spot. However, the host refused the money and said he loved dogs anyway.
He left, and the couple didn’t think about the issue further.
Being Accountable

The couple felt bad about their mistake, so before they left, OP and his girlfriend gave the place a “more thorough cleaning than was in the instructions.”
He added, “The dog didn’t chew any furniture or leave any other damage or mess—at least that we didn’t clean up.”
Positive Reviews

For OP and his girlfriend, the trip was a success, and the Airbnb was “a great fit.”
So, when he received an email asking him to leave a review, he gave them five stars. He even said the house and the owner were great!
Negative Reviews and Upsetting Messages

However, OP saw the host’s review of him and a private message where he was “blasted” for not telling the Airbnb host about the dog.
He wrote, “He blasted me for not telling him that I was bringing a dog, how dogs cause them so much more work, and how we shouldn’t leave dogs alone in the house.”
Cheap Shot

The issue didn’t sit well with OP because he believed they had settled things in person when the Airbnb host came by. He even said he “was and still is happy to pay for the pet fee.”
OP added, “There was no indication anywhere on the posting that we couldn’t leave the dog alone for a few hours while we were at a wedding, nor did he say that while we chatted and told him we were here for a wedding. For him to post that on my Airbnb profile felt like a cheap shot.”
Trying to Solve Things

OP responded to the host’s message and explained his side of the story. However, he mentioned that the company itself couldn’t do anything about the review since it “didn’t violate any of their policies.”
Violation of Company Policy

Even so, OP’s girlfriend pointed out that the host himself violated one of the policies. It turns out that hosts “aren’t supposed to show up to the property unannounced.”
OP didn’t know about this rule. He assumed they were free to show up to check in with the guests.
Cooking up a Storm

OP usually wouldn’t care about something like this, especially since their interaction with the Airbnb host, at the time, was nothing but cordial.
However, since he “took a cheap shot” with his review on OP’s stay, he decided to do the same!
Customer Support

He contacted Airbnb’s customer support and told them about the host’s surprise visit. They then forwarded it to their security team.
OP had to answer some questions about the interaction, and Airbnb’s team called the host.
Repercussions

A week or so after he reported the host, the company reached out to OP and let him know that the host violated their policy.
OP even got refunded two-thirds of his stay, which was about $200—all because of a bad review!
Redditors’ Opinions

Some Redditors had similar experiences with OP and shared what they went through.
One wrote, “We had an Airbnb host— after reviewing us and a month after our stay—message us regarding black sharpie stains on the granite counter. They said my nine-month-old niece somehow got on the four-foot-tall counters and defaced it. They said we were disrespectful and should’ve told them about this instead of trying to hide it under the coffee pot. I told them, ‘Have you tried wiping the marks? That looks like skid marks from the bottom of the coffee pot.’ It was. They didn’t apologize. We don’t even drink coffee.”
Airbnb Hosts Should Be More Responsible

Some users also likened Airbnb to the hotel industry.
He said, “There’s a reason the hotel industry is labor intensive. If they put up their house on Airbnb, they have essentially joined the hotel industry and should budget for manpower to clean up and restock the house after each client.” Another replied, “Seems like most of them leave a chore list for you to complete and charge a bunch of extra money for hired cleaners. At this point, it’s actually kind of a refreshing change to stay at a real hotel. I decline housekeeping during my stay and straighten up before I leave. But at least I don’t have to sweep, run a load of towels, etc., before I can finally go home.”
What do you think of OP’s revenge? Do you believe the Airbnb host deserved it?
