Her cousin kept pestering her, asking if he could propose to his girlfriend at her wedding. Now he’s mad because she refused to let him steal one of the most important days of her life!
No Need to Think Things Through
OP (Original Poster), a 29-year-old woman, uninvited her cousin, a 25-year-old man, from her wedding. If someone were to ask her, the reason’s simple and straightforward enough, and you’ll surely agree with her decision!
One night, OP and her relatives were having dinner, and everyone was having fun. Then, suddenly, OP’s cousin pulled her aside, happily told her he would propose to his girlfriend, and showed her the ring.
She was genuinely happy for him because she knew his partner was a fantastic woman, and she was glad he wanted to take things further.
An Inappropriate Thing to Ask
However, OP was blindsided when her cousin asked her if he could propose to his girlfriend at her wedding. OP laughed, thinking it was only a joke.
But contrary to what she thought, he was serious about the question, so OP apologized and said she didn’t want him to do such a thing. Her cousin was angry that she rejected his request and didn’t talk to her for the rest of the evening.
Sharing Her Big Day?
She thought it was over, but OP’s cousin called the following day. He’s asking, one more time, if he could propose to his girlfriend at her wedding.
He said it would be “so beautiful to share her most exciting day.” OP said no and made it clear that she didn’t want to talk about it anymore.
He Couldn’t Give It Up
However, a few days later, her cousin called her again to ask about the same exact thing. That’s when OP got angry and told him not to call her about it again.
She told him that even if she did, she wouldn’t be picking up until after her wedding, and he could text her if he needed something from her.
Don’t Bother Coming
He got mad at OP and told her that he would propose at her wedding anyway and that she wouldn’t be able to do anything. Because of that, OP told him he wasn’t welcome at the wedding anymore and that she’d make sure he wouldn’t be there.
OP told her cousin’s girlfriend that they weren’t invited anymore because of a fight she had with her cousin. She, however, didn’t tell her about her cousin’s plan to propose as that would be unfair to her.
No Place for Them on Her Big Day
OP’s aunt flooded her phone with messages two days before her wedding. She demanded that OP invite her son to the ceremony again, saying that if he wasn’t coming, then neither was she.
OP then told her that she didn’t have to and hung up. Just as OP guessed, her aunt and cousin didn’t show up.
After the wedding, many people asked OP why her cousin wasn’t there, and she told them that it was because of a fight. But her aunt told everyone the truth.
OP wrote, “Most of my family members are on my side, but some are mad at me and are taking my cousin’s side, saying it’s not that big of a deal.”
We’ve Got Your Back!
Though there were people against her decision, she knew she wasn’t alone in thinking that her cousin was in the wrong. Before the wedding, OP told her wife about what happened and what her cousin asked her.
She agreed that the proposal wasn’t a good idea and backed her up; OP talked to her mother, who’s also on her side. Unfortunately, until now, her cousin is still furious.
She Had Her Doubts
In all honesty, OP felt bad and believed a part of her was selfish, thinking that maybe it wasn’t that big of a deal. She thought that perhaps she could’ve shared her big day.
But it’s more reasonable to think there are better places for someone to propose. Surely, no woman would want to be proposed to at another person’s wedding, right?
His Own Kind of Revenge
OP tried to contact her cousin to sort things out, but he refused to talk to her. She also discovered that she’d been uninvited from her cousin’s birthday dinner, which she thought was his way of getting back at her for uninviting him from her wedding.
She admits that being uninvited doesn’t bother her that much and that she doesn’t feel as bad about uninviting him as before.
OP added, “I’m glad I got to enjoy my most important day with the woman I love the most and my close family.”
What Redditors Think of the Issue
Many people pointed out that OP’s cousin didn’t want to share her big day but instead tried to steal it from her. He had a plan to propose but did not even try to make an effort.
“The reason your cousin wanted to propose at your wedding wasn’t to share your day with you, but was so he could have a romantic setting with all his family and friends there for free,” the top commenter wrote.
Another person added to the previous comment, saying, “He wanted a party for himself, but he didn’t want to plan it or pay for it.”
It’s Not His Day!
Redditors have also said that what OP’s cousin did wasn’t respectful at all, and he shouldn’t have tried to make OP’s wedding day all about him and should’ve stopped asking when OP had already said no in the first place.
A Redditor said, “Rule of thumb: When attending someone else’s wedding, don’t whine, pout, or make everything all about you. Proposing at someone else’s wedding definitely falls into that category. Sorry, your cousin and your aunt didn’t get the memo. He asked, you said no. That should have ended the discussion right there. Even if you were wrong—you weren’t—it was your wedding and your rules, and your wife’s, of course. The fact that he pushed it against your opposition makes him the a**hole, not you. Glad you stuck to your guns. Good job!”
Another person wrote, “Why should you pay for this huge event and pour your heart and soul into it, and then they just get down on one knee to take the glory for themselves? Your cousin is super selfish. Especially after hearing no and then getting upset.”
What would you do if you were OP? Would you let your cousin propose at your wedding?
