Both OP and her husband work in the medical field. This led to their schedules being unpredictable.
Helping Hands
To help the family out, OP’s mother-in-law moved in and took care of things while they were working. She also agreed to watch their daughter when she gets home from school.
OP explained, “She makes dinner the nights we’re working late for our daughter. As my mother-in-law loves to cook, she assured us that it would be no trouble for her to make our daughter dinner most nights.”
Reunited Family
One day, OP and her husband finally have an evening off together after working crazy schedules. They decided to make dinner together while her mother-in-law went out with friends.
Sick and Starved
However, while OP and her husband were making dinner, they soon discovered that all was not well. Susie cried to them, saying she was “tired of being starved most nights.”
Susie begged her parents to start making her dinners from now on instead of her grandmother.
Horrifying Realization
Both parents were shocked and wanted to figure out what was going on. After talking to their daughter, they discovered that OP’s mother-in-law had only prepared dishes with mushrooms as the main component.

When Susie politely asked to be excused from eating mushrooms, her grandmother would tell her, “Suit yourself, but you’re not getting any other food the rest of the night.” She also told Susie she needed to “outgrow this stupid mushroom hatred.”

Both OP and her husband were extremely angry that their child had been sent to bed hungry every night. They knew Susie wasn’t picky and that it was only mushrooms that she had an issue with.
