This woman is already doing her sister a favor by splitting everyone’s inheritances equally and giving her a cut, although she’s been disowned. What more does she want?
Four Daughters Left Behind
OP (Original Poster) is a 50-year-old and one of 4 of her parents’ daughters. She’s the second child, while her sister, 53-year-old J, is the eldest.
Her other two sisters, S and L, are 48 and 45. All four of them were left to fend for themselves as their dad passed away a couple of years before this story was posted, and their mom died just a few months back.
Disinherited Child
However, the issue is that J was not in their mom’s will. There was some family drama between J and OP’s parents and between J and OP and their other siblings.
A Mom’s Soft Heart
Although J wasn’t in the will, OP’s mom still had a soft spot for her daughter. So, she told OP to give J an equal share should she ever ask for it.
OP and her two younger sisters agreed and promised to do so when the time came.
Making a Fuss
Then, when their mom died and J found out about the will, she went “bats*** crazy.” To appease her, OP and her younger siblings told her they’d give her a “fair share.”
An Equal Division
A couple of days after their initial discussion, OP and all three of her sisters started talking to a lawyer about dividing everything into four equally. The only thing that won’t be included in the mix would be the house OP’s parents lived in, as it was explicitly left to her youngest sister.
OP wrote, “She is the one who took care of my mother in her final few years as me and S were working. My elder sister didn’t agree with this at first, but later, she agreed to it.”
Sister’s Greed
After dividing all of their parents’ assets, J suddenly said she wasn’t happy with the share she was getting.
She wanted the property and piece of land their dad left their mom!
Unfair Advantage
OP explained that when their dad passed away, all his properties and assets went to their mom. One of those assets was a piece of land he owned that was worth “much more” than their mom’s land.
She wrote, “His land was on the banks of a waterfall, so that area was much more expensive.”
A Huge Ask
J told OP that she didn’t want much from their mom’s land; she only wanted more of their father’s land because it was “more expensive.”
She also told her that a part of their inheritance should be given to her eldest child. J reasoned that their dad “told her” that since her child was the “first child in the family,” he’d give him some of his land after his death.
No Way That’s Gonna Happen
However, OP and her two siblings disagreed with everything J demanded.
OP wrote, “If she takes more for my father’s land, then the dividing will not be equal, and if a part of my father’s land is given to her eldest child, then me and my sisters will not be having any land from my father’s side.”
No Proof
Apart from this, OP said neither she nor her younger sisters ever knew about this supposed plan that their dad had.
Additionally, OP and her siblings had kids in their late teens and early 20s. If they’re left out, and the only other person to get a cut of the land is their cousin on J’s side, they will “feel bad.”
Unabashed Greed
So, ultimately, OP and her younger sisters told J that they would only split the estate into four equal parts. She added that “nothing special” will be given to anyone’s child.
OP wrote, “My elder sister earns a lot of money compared to us, and she will be well off even without any inheritance, but she’s being greedy.”
In the Law’s Hands
After this, J shamelessly filed a case against her own sisters. So now, their dad’s land is in nobody’s ownership.
She added, “Civil cases can go on for years, so control of all the land is with the court.”
Ready for a Fair Share
Even so, OP and her younger siblings are still sticking to the promise they made to their mom. They’re hurt by what J did, but they are still willing to give her an equal share of their parents’ estate; the only problem now is J’s insistence and pride.
OP shared, “After filing the case, we told her that she is not getting anything from the inheritance, but still, we are ready to give her an equal cut if she takes her case back. But she said she is not taking the case back, and she is not happy with equal.”

Users reassured OP that she wasn’t doing anything wrong. In fact, she and her sisters are already going above and beyond by splitting the inheritance into four equal parts when they could quickly get away without doing so.

“Without knowing any more about the ‘drama,’ it sounds like you and your sisters and the estate attorney have decided what is fair. It’s not up to J to make that decision. She’s the one who developed the relationship with your mom, and she could have made efforts to ‘fix’ it. She didn’t, and now it’s too late. Also, nothing should be going separately to J’s oldest child. If J wants her child to receive part of the land, then J can give part of her share to her child. Not the a**hole,” said another user.
You’ve Done Enough
Others also rallied behind OP and her sisters, reiterating that they’ve done more than enough for J and even offered a sound compromise.
One man said, “Not the a**hole. You have compromised, which she should have been thankful for then she realized she wanted more than what you have compromised. Take her off from the inheritance for good, not even a single cent.”
Another wrote, “Not the a**hole. It sounds like you have been really accommodating in a situation where, legally, she has little to no rights, and she just wants to push her own agenda further and further. I am really sorry that she didn’t see that forcing you all down the path that she has chosen would tie up everything in litigation for years and would end up costing all of you a large portion of the inheritance.”
Not a Cent
Others then advised OP not to give J a cent anymore. She doesn’t deserve her or her younger sisters’ kindness!
“Not the a**hole. Don’t give her anything anymore. She wasn’t in the wheel for a reason, and now she’s being greedy. She can’t just pick and choose what she wants. And her child has nothing to do with it,” commented one woman.
Another woman agreed and said, “Not the a**hole. Even if she pulls the lawsuit, I wouldn’t offer her anything. She decided that money was worth more than her relationship with her siblings. She decided that since your mom left her out now, she needed extra ‘compensation’ for her hurt feelings despite you guys being willing to give her an equal share. It’s rude, it’s disrespectful, and that takes some audacity. Don’t give her a cent; she clearly has no concept of what’s fair.”
