OP (Original Poster) inherited everything her grandmother owned. After finding out, her greedy uncle demanded she give him his money, but she refused, knowing full well her grandmother would be against it!
The Cons of Being Rich
Everyone knew that OP’s grandmother was wealthy, especially OP’s relatives. Additionally, her grandmother was kind and helpful toward anyone who needed it.
So, with her grandmother’s kindness and money combined, people often took advantage of her. Sadly, no one other than her uncle did this as often and as much.
Treating Her Like an ATM
OP’s uncle would always ask her grandmother for money for whatever reason, whether it was a necessity like school payments and rent or something he wanted, like a high-ticket item.
OP’s father had always stopped her uncle from doing such things. However, when her dad passed, it seemed like her uncle had worsened.
Can You Buy This? Can You Buy That?
After some time, OP’s uncle got “more aggressive” when asking her grandmother for “handouts.” He made her grandmother co-sign a new Jeep and 2,400 square feet home for him and his wife.
OP was sure these were things they couldn’t afford, saying, “By no means could they afford this home.”
You Want It, You Got It!
OP’s grandmother also signed against threats to have her grandchildren cut off. So, now, whenever her uncle’s family wanted a new television or a vacation, for example, they wouldn’t bother to pay their bills and would just let her grandmother take the responsibility of paying.
Growing Up Exactly Like Him
OP’s uncle taught his children not to ask him if they wanted something and to ask their grandmother instead. So it was inevitable that as his kids got older, they started to treat their grandmother “just as poorly.”
Selfish Nature Shining Through!
As OP’s grandmother aged, OP and her family suggested that she move and live in a place where her close friends were, but OP’s uncle had other plans for his mother. His children were getting older, so when their grandmother was over 80, OP’s uncle and his family pressured her to sell her home and get another mortgage in the city.
This was so his kids could have a free place to stay while they went to school. As usual, OP’s uncle got exactly what he wanted when his mother bought the large five-bedroom house his family can use.
Poor Granny
After this, OP’s grandmother finally drew the line and stopped supporting her uncle financially.
OP wrote, “She was miserable in that house, and as his kids started to move in, she had to do everything for them.”
Time to Handle His Own Bills
For the very first time, her grandmother threatened her uncle. Although OP was not quite sure what she told him, OP’s uncle paid for his own mortgage with the money he got from taking out a second mortgage.
The Sole Heir
One day, OP’s grandmother asked her to visit, so she did, and they had a great time catching up. Eventually, her grandmother told her that “a change was being made in her will,” stating that her uncle would no longer get an inheritance; he wouldn’t get anything she owned!
OP wrote, “She said she felt like she had already given him his inheritance and then some, and with my dad passed, it would come to me. She only gave me two conditions: don’t tell anyone and don’t give a cent to my uncle.”
As She Wished
When OP’s grandmother passed away, everything went to her name. Her uncle was furious and called her, saying that the money was his and that it was the only thing his family relied on to support themselves.
But of course, as her grandmother told her, she didn’t give in.
Freeloaders No More
OP then started to charge rent for her cousins, who stayed in the house their grandmother bought in the city. The rent was only half what it should be, yet they still acted like she was “robbing them.”
You Can’t Claim What’s Not Yours
OP’s uncle and his family started calling her a “cheat” and accused her of “stealing” their inheritance. Her uncle would constantly demand for the money whenever they saw each other.
He tried guilt-tripping her, saying he couldn’t keep up with all their payments, so she should “help family first like grandma did.” However, no matter what he said, OP refused to help at all.
What Redditors Have to Say
The Reddit community believes that OP’s grandmother was right for what she did. OP knew what her uncle had done, and because of this, it was clear there was a reason behind OP’s grandmother’s decision to make her the sole inheritor of her estate.
“Not the a**hole. Your grandmother set up her will the way she wanted it handled. She wasn’t strong enough to stop their abuse, and she is counting on you to fulfill her last wish. Also, charge them fair market. You need to keep up the house and pay taxes,” a Redditor said.
Another commented, “Your grandma was right. Uncle got his inheritance and then some. If they can’t afford their lifestyle, they don’t get to ask for handouts. They can downsize and adapt their lifestyle to their budget. At this point, if they don’t stop harassing you, you should evict them and rent the house out at market value.”
They Should Act Like Real Adults!
Others backed OP’s decision and said that what she did was only reasonable. It’s time that her uncle’s family face the consequences of their actions and be responsible adults.
A Redditor wrote, “Your grandmother clearly wanted you to have it, and she had every right to decide how to distribute her assets. Your uncle and his family have been exploiting your grandmother for years and have shown no gratitude or respect for her. They have no claim to her estate, and they are being greedy and selfish. You are honoring your grandmother’s wishes and memory by keeping what she left you. You are also being fair and reasonable by charging rent to your uncle’s kids, who are staying in the house. You have no obligation to help them financially or otherwise. They are adults, and they need to take responsibility for their own lives.”
Should OP share the inheritance with her uncle? What are your thoughts?
