Her Step-Aunt Demanded She Give Her So-Called Cousins a Cut of the $250,000 Inheritance She Received From Her Grandparents, but She Refused Because They’re Entitled “Gold Diggers!”

This Redditor and her sister inherited a hefty sum from their grandparents. Now, her step-aunt of three years wants them to split their share with her kids. It’s crazy and absolutely selfish!

The Only Grandchildren

OP (Original Poster) and her sister are her grandparent’s only grandchildren. They had only three kids: OP’s dad, aunt, and uncle.

Her aunt and uncle unfortunately don’t have any kids of their own.

An Instant Family

However, around three years before this story was posted, OP’s uncle got married to his now wife, Mary, and she has three kids. It was as if, in the blink of an eye, her uncle suddenly had a family for years!

No Effort Made

Sadly, Mary’s kids “barely” made an effort to be a part of OP’s uncle’s life. He sees them occasionally, but only because they have a good relationship with their mom, Mary.

Unsurprisingly, Mary’s kids made even less of an attempt with the rest of OP’s family.

She wrote, “I’ve never even met them. My grandparents have tried to get to know them but with little luck.”

Money-Making House

Then, OP explained that a few weeks before this story was posted, she learned that her grandparents bought a “fairly nice house” when she was still a baby. One of their plans was to sell the house when they got ready to move and split the money among their grandchildren.

OP’s dad and his siblings would get whatever was left of OP’s grandparents’ estate and will, but the house was how they wanted to “set up” their grandchildren.

Her grandparents saved a good amount of money for themselves and were now moving into a retirement community.

They sold the house, and as planned, the profit went to OP and her sister. They each got around $250,000.

Set for Life

OP’s incredibly thankful to receive her $250,000, saying it would be handy for her and her husband. She explained that they’ve been looking for a bigger house because they’re about to have their second child.

The money will allow them to put in a “sizable downpayment” on a house, and she’ll still have enough to put into savings.

Settling Debts

On the other hand, OP’s sister plans to use the money to pay off some of her student loans. She’s also going to put the rest of the money into savings.

Their Grateful Hearts

Both OP and her sister are “really grateful” to their grandparents. She said, “We both really feel like this will set us up well for the future.”

An Upset Step-Aunt

However, their good mood didn’t last for long. The day before this story was posted, OP received a call from her uncle, saying that Mary was “very upset” that her children were excluded from the will.

She said that her kids were her grandparents’ grandchildren now, too, so they deserved a cut.

There’s a Reason for Everything

When OP and her sister turned to their grandparents for advice, they only told them that it was up to them if they would share their money. However, they also left them with a reminder: they left it to them for a reason!

Now OP’s torn because she and her sister had plans for the money.

She said, “If they had made any effort at all to be ‘grandchildren’ to my grandparents, I wouldn’t hesitate. But they didn’t even meet my grandparents until they were in their late teens or early 20s, and they have made little effort since.”

The Community’s Reactions

Redditors were appalled by Mary’s audacity and selfishness. They also reminded OP that she had no responsibility toward her so-called cousins.

A top commenter said, “Not the a**hole. Your grandparents had plenty of opportunities to change their will. Mary’s only been in your family for three years! She is absolutely 100% wrong to count on something for her kids, and she is 1000% wrong in trying to pressure you for it. She’s a gold-digging fortune-seeker. Tell her you are honoring your grandparents’ wishes, and that is the last on this topic. Your uncle is a real jerk for doing this. I’d block him and his wife.”

“I agree. Not the a**hole! Even if they have only been part of the family for the past three years, they have not actually tried to be part of the family. They have not wanted to interact with or get to know anyone from your side of the family at all. No one has a right to have hurt feelings when they are the ones who have chosen not to participate,” commented another Redditor.

Basically Strangers

For others, Mary and her kids were basically strangers. They don’t have any rights to what OP and her sister received.

One woman wrote, “Not the a**hole. These people are strangers. I would ask the aunt, ‘So when grandma and grandpa get older, your kids intend to help take care of them? To sit with them at the hospital if needed. To clean up their house, or cook, or take them to doctor’s appointments. They’re going to financially contribute monthly to the care of them as well, if needed. Right? Or would they not because these people are complete strangers to them, have no relationship, and only pop up when they think they can get money off of them?’ Do not give these people a cent.”

Another person said, “They didn’t want anything to do with the grandparents until there was money involved. Not the a**hole. Not a penny, not one red cent, are they entitled to. This is literally the consequences of their own actions, or inactions as it were, nothing more.”

What do you think about Mary and her kids? Do you think they deserve anything?
