This Redditor booked her plane seat months in advance and paid extra to be upfront. So, when a man suddenly demanded she swap seats with him in the back, she refused! Was she selfish?
Preparation Is the Key to Success
OP (Original Poster) had booked a 12-hour flight months in advance. She even paid an extra $55 to choose where her seat was: at the very front of the plane.
Being Tardy Is Foolhardy
She had taken extra care in booking early and choosing a front-row seat because she needed to “arrive somewhere on time upon landing.”
Coincidentally, the seat also happened to have extra legroom. However, this fact didn’t matter much to OP, as she’s only 4’11”.
Calm Before the Storm
Everything was going well, and OP boarded the plane without issues. She took her seat, buckled her seatbelt, and waited for the plane to take off.
However, minutes into her flight, everything started to go wrong!
As soon as the seatbelt sign switched off, a towering man loomed over her and demanded she change seats with him because he’s 6’4” and “flying is painful for him.”
Back of the Line
OP admitted she was “open to it” until she saw that his seat was all the way in the back of the plane. That meant she’d be last getting off the plane after it landed, increasing her odds of being late to where she needed to be.
After all, she hadn’t booked her seat months in advance and paid extra for no reason. OP had done her due diligence to ensure her trip would go smoothly.
OP politely told him no. She even went so far as to apologize, despite his problem being of his own lack of planning.
She also explained that she had “paid extra to sit up front.”
Suffice to say, the man didn’t like what he heard. He grew increasingly irate and refused to leave OP alone.
He yelled at her, saying, “There’s no reason someone of your height needs extra legroom!”
OP remained calm in the face of the man’s outrageous behavior. She reminded him she had paid extra to be seated up front.
Figure It Out
She then suggested the man ask the other people sitting in the front row seats if they’d be nice enough to swap with him.
OP was doing her best to help him sort out his dilemma.
Not Having It
Unfortunately, the man couldn’t care less that OP was still being kind and trying to help him find a seat. He refused, stating he didn’t want to bother other men or split up couples.
Everyone Is Equal
It didn’t make sense that the man refused to ask other people. He was also making assumptions about people being couples.
It would have been easy for him to go over and ask the other people sitting in the front rows. Instead, he chose to keep harassing OP.
Adult Temper Tantrum
The rude man kept getting angrier as he tried to bully OP into moving.
Finally, OP had had enough. She called the flight attendant over, who made the man sit down in his seat at the back of the plane.
With the seat issue somewhat resolved, she thought all would be well for the remaining hours of her flight. However, OP soon discovered the man wasn’t finished with her.
Throughout the flight, the man would get up, walk past her aisle seat, and slam into her.
What Redditors Think
Redditors supported OP’s decision to remain in her original seat despite how much the man bullied her and even physically assaulted her.
One top commenter said, “So my brother is 6’6″. You know what he does when he has to fly? He makes sure to get an emergency exit row or whatever row has the extra legroom. He usually has to pay for it. Any tall person with a lick of common sense knows they have to do this for flights. This tall person knows they will need more legroom but chooses to try to get out of paying for it by getting a person to switch. OP was totally in their right to say no, especially as she paid extra, and the tall person does not have the right to be a jerk about it. Did the tall guy offer OP to reimburse her for the extra amount paid? Of course not. Also, gotta love that the guy targeted the lone woman and wouldn’t think to ‘bother a man or couples.’ Guy was a jerk, nuff said, the end. Not the a**hole.”
Users were also quick to note that airlines need better seat regulations.
One Redditor commented, “Honestly, airlines need to be forced to have seating suitable for actual people. The guy was obviously 100% an a**hole, but you should not have to pay more due to your physical attributes or be forced to sit in painful positions. All seats should be able to reasonably fit people.”
What do you think? Should OP have gotten up and given the man her seat, or was she in the right for staying put?
