A Broken Family
OP’s (Original Poster) dad left her mom when OP was only 10 years old. Her dad decided to do so because he was having another baby with his then-girlfriend, now-wife.
Mistreated Wife and Mom
To give some more background, OP explained that her mother had been a stay-at-home mom who didn’t finish college. She had gotten pregnant with OP’s older brother, which essentially tied her to OP’s dad.
OP wrote, “My father was an a** and made the divorce as s***ty as possible for my mom.”
Her Paternal Grandparents
Because of the fallout, OP, her mom, and her brother moved in with her paternal grandparents. OP’s dad was their only child, and they were disappointed in his actions.
OP’s grandparents helped her mom go back to school. Then, when she finished college, she offered to pay them back, but they refused.
Basically Estranged
Apart from OP being estranged from her dad, her grandparents basically “disowned” him.
She wrote, “He was invited over for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but that was about it. They did love their other grandchildren, though. They always provided gifts and contributed to their education.”
Saying Goodbye to Her Grandparents
Sadly, a few years before this story was posted, OP’s grandmother died of breast cancer. Then, her grandfather passed away a year before OP shared this story due to complications related to the pandemic.
Their Inheritance
When her paternal grandfather passed away, he left everything to OP and her brother. She said it wasn’t life-changing in a way that they could already stop working, stop saving for retirement, pay off her debts, and change her lifestyle, but it was still a considerable amount.
OP and her brother each got over $100,000!
Their Father’s and Half-Siblings’ Inheritance
On the other hand, their father only got $500. OP said, “The lawyer explained that it was a way of avoiding him being able to challenge the will.”
Then, OP’s half-siblings were left with $10,000 each. She shared, “My grandfather said that since my brother and I had grown up without a father, by his choice, but his other children had, then he felt this was fair.”
They Loved Her Like a Daughter
Meanwhile, OP’s mom got her paternal grandfather’s house and some money. They weren’t related by blood, but she’d been caring for OP’s grandparents for a long time.
Thus, they never stopped thinking of her as their own daughter.
Estranged Father’s Request
Recently, OP’s dad contacted her and her brother, saying their half-siblings are “struggling” financially. So, they ”should split everything with them” because they didn’t need the money; after all, they were both well-established in their careers.
Contacting Their Mom
He didn’t stop with just OP and her brother. OP’s dad also reached out to her mom to make her renounce her inheritance.
OP wrote, “She laughed in his face and asked for all the child support he owed.”
What They Deserved
Though OP understood it was not their half-siblings’ fault, she and her brother agreed not to split the money.
For her, it was only fair. They got to have a dad to take care of them while growing up, and they didn’t.

Because of their refusal, OP’s dad, her half-siblings, and their mom accuse them of being “a**holes.” They said OP and her brother were “so greedy” because they weren’t helping them through hard times.
