OP (Original Poster) is an 18-year-old girl. Her mother had cheated on her father when she was 10, and the affair had resulted in the birth of another kid.

OP had a new sister born from the infidelity named Kathy. Soon after Kathy was born, OP was not allowed to see her grandparents as her mother and father cut them out of their lives.

Staying Together

Despite the hardship of being cheated on, her father didn’t leave her mother. It wasn’t until OP turned 18 that she connected with her grandparents after they reached out to her.

A Truthful Reunion

OP and her grandparents had lunch together, and they told her what had happened.

After Kathy had been born, they made it clear they didn’t consider her their grandchild because OP’s father wasn’t her biological dad. She said that her grandmother noted that “she is the product of her mom cheating on her son,” OP’s dad.

To Top It Off

On top of Kathy not being their biological grandchild, Kathy’s dad was still in the picture. He hadn’t given up his rights and had partial custody of Kathy.

As a result of this, OP’s grandparents refused to make a college fund for her. The result of all this was that OP’s parents “cut them out” of their lives.

The result of reconnecting with her grandparents was that OP learned she had a college fund. She decided to take the money but went home and kept her meeting with her grandparents to herself.

The Secret Is Out

OP enjoyed reconnecting with her grandparents and enjoyed hanging out with them. She couldn’t keep it a secret forever, and her parents did find out who she had been spending time with.

How Dare She?

OP’s parents couldn’t believe that she had taken the money. After all, they were still angry with her grandparents for not accepting Kathy and shunning her.

A Strong Defense

As the argument continued, OP told her parents that her grandparents had been right. Given the circumstances and what had happened, they weren’t wrong for not seeing Kathy as their grandchild.

To make her point further, OP let her parents know how angry she was at them for cutting her grandparents out of her life. She told them that they could “screw off” for not letting her know or connect with her grandparents.

An Eerie Quiet

OP’s parents haven’t contacted or spoken to her since the fight. Because of this, OP began to doubt herself, so she turned to Reddit for help.

She said, “I could be a jerk for choosing them over my primary family.”

What the Community Has to Say

Redditors were quick to side with OP, and many had something to say about how her parents acted.

A comment that summed up most reactions to the story was, “Not the a**hole. It’s embarrassing that your parents expected them to make a college fund for her when they didn’t have to do it for either of you. Take the money. In this economy, you’re going to need that college fund. You’re also an adult who can create a relationship with your grandparents. Your parents are just going to have to suck it up.”

Another commenter was even more straightforward, saying, “Not the a**hole. Your grandparents are right. Kathy, who is not at fault here, is not their grandchild but a constant reminder of how your mom cheated on their son. Even if your dad forgave her, that doesn’t mean everyone needs to, and everyone needs to treat her like she is your dad’s. They even robbed you of your grandparents just because they felt entitled to your grandparents’ money.”

Staggering Arrogance

Many Redditors thought that OP’s mother was incredibly arrogant and wrong.

One summed it up best by saying, “Not the a**hole. Why should you lose out because your mother can’t shut her legs? And purely on a factual basis, Kathy isn’t their grandchild. The audacity of your mother expecting them to set up a college fund for a child who isn’t even related to them is truly something special.”

Do you think that OP is wrong to take the money and connect with her grandparents? Should they have accepted Kathy as their granddaughter even when her biological father is still in the picture?
