This Redditor was all set for college; she’s got the money and her maternal family’s support. Now, her stepfamily’s forcing her to share her funds with her stepsister, but she doesn’t think she should!
Thinking of Her Daughter’s Future
When OP (Original Poster), now 18, was 10, her mother passed away. Her parents were already divorced then, so she became the sole beneficiary of her mother’s estate.
This makes her eligible for a trust fund that her grandfather was managing for her until she turned 25. Part of the trust her mom left for her included money to help her pay for college, which OP would be getting access to soon.
Her Father’s New Family
Though her mom’s gone, OP’s not entirely alone. Her father married her stepmother shortly after his divorce from her mother, and now, he has two stepdaughters.
Her stepmom had Hannah, a 16-year-old, and Emma, 18, before she met OP’s dad.
The Villains in Her Story
Since her mother passed away, OP has been living with her dad full time and would only spend school holidays with her grandparents.
For the first couple of years, things were going fine. But her stepsisters got jealous of her and her cousins’ “fancy international trips” with her grandparents and started complaining about it.
Dad’s Unfair Actions
Because of her stepsisters, her dad tried to force her to limit contact with her grandparents. But they threatened to sue her dad for grandparents’ rights, so he had to stop.
Instead, he started withholding permission to allow her to fly without him; as a minor, his dad held all the power in this aspect. He also wouldn’t let OP keep the gifts her grandparents bought for her.
A Parent’s Accountability
Everything got worse when OP had a conversation with her dad, stepmom, and stepsister. Before this story was posted, her dad and stepmom asked her to sit down so they could have a conversation with her and Emma to inform them that they would not be able to help them pay for college.
According to them, they ran into some financial trouble several years ago and had to use the money to keep them up and living. OP wrote, “Emma was devastated, and when I didn’t have the same reaction, my dad asked me why I wasn’t upset.”
Got It All Figured Out
She explained that she still had the money her mother left her, that her grandparents had a separate college fund for her, and that her maternal aunt and uncle also had “smaller college funds” saved for her.
Aside from that, her paternal aunt also gave her $5,000 as a gift when she graduated high school, which was also meant for her education. With all the money she had for college, OP was confident she could finish her degree without getting a student loan so long as she worked part-time.
Their Entitled Persistence
Afterward, Emma and OP’s stepmother insisted that she share her college funds with Emma; otherwise, it wouldn’t be “fair.” OP refused, saying it was her maternal family’s money, so she doesn’t think she should share it with someone who isn’t related to them.
Rubbing It in Her Face
That’s when her stepmom screamed at her and called her “ungrateful” for everything she had done for OP. She then threatened to sue OP for all of the money she spent on her while growing up.
Taking His Daughter’s Side
Hearing his wife’s remarks, OP’s father got mad at her stepmom and told her to stop.
Now, they’re not speaking to each other.
Begging for Her to Reconsider
Her dad sided with her when her stepmother got nasty and told her that he was happy that OP could attend college without any debts. However, he also pleaded with her to consider giving Emma “at least one of the smaller funds.”
Making Her Life Hell
Since then, Emma and Hannah have been “horrible” to her. Her stepmother also started forcing Emma’s chores on her.
Aside from all that, Hannah even told OP that if their parents divorce, it’ll all be her fault for being a “greedy b****.”
The Community’s Take on the Matter
Many people suggested OP move out and stay with her grandparents. She shouldn’t let her stepmom and stepsisters treat her wrongly!
The top commenter wrote, “Not the a**hole. Tell your grandparents what’s happening. Can you go live with them? I’d get out of the house. They will continue to treat you like crap.”
Someone also said, “Not the a**hole. Now that you are 18, you should consider living going to live with your mom’s relatives to get away from your stepmom.”
Zip It!
Some think OP shouldn’t have shared too much information regarding her college funds since it’s personal.
A Redditor wrote, “Not the a**hole. But you should learn to keep your personal financial information to yourself.”
“Not the a**hole. I wouldn’t have divulged as much as you did, and I don’t know how much of what you said came off as bragging, but I would have alluded to my grandparents having already taken care of it. It’s something that a grandparent decided to do for a grandchild, so even if it’s an alteration of the truth, the ex couldn’t go to them and insist upon them paying for some other person’s child’s college education,” another person said.
Hold On for a Bit Longer!
Some Redditors feel for OP’s current living situation. Thankfully, they reminded her that she’d be starting college soon, which meant getting away from her toxic family.
One said, “Not the a**hole. That money was left for you to further your education. Think of it this way: what would those who have added to the fund want you to do? In a few weeks, you’ll be out of there. Just hang tight until then, and then, if it were me, I’d limit it to family contact only.”
Do you think OP was being greedy? What would you do if you were her?
