This Redditor inherited millions from her father-in-law after caring for him when he was sick. Now her brother-in-law thinks he’s entitled to the money, even after he turned his back on a dying man!
Obligations and Responsibilities
OP (Original Poster) has been married to her husband, Andy, for five years. Sadly, a year after their wedding, OP’s mother-in-law passed away.
Left alone, OP told Andy they should ask his dad, Jacob, to live with them or Andy’s sister, Monica. OP wrote, “I think it’s the Asian in me that makes me feel we are obligated to take care of my father-in-law.”
A Firm Refusal
So, Andy called his sister, Monica, to discuss their dad’s living arrangements. She lived in Maryland, while OP and her husband lived in Ohio.
Unfortunately, Monica’s husband, Arthur, was immediately against the idea. He told them they had no room in their house; they had an extra bedroom, which was reserved for guests.
Spinning the Tale
Arthur insisted they move Jacob to a retirement house. Then, he also started targeting Andy’s emotions, saying Jacob was busy and strict when they were younger, and therefore, they didn’t have the best relationship.
However, Andy said, “Yeah, Dad was strict, and sometimes, he said something cruel, but that is the past, and he is a different person now.”
Offering Up Their Home
Given Monica and Arthur’s stance, OP asked them if it would be alright if they asked Jacob if he wanted to move into OP and Andy’s place, and they said yes.
However, when the couple asked Jacob, he was grateful but declined the offer.
Their Little Bundle of Joy
Four months after that conversation, OP gave birth to their baby boy. Jacob then visited them to meet his new grandson, and he changed his mind about his living arrangements.
He chose to stay with OP and Andy, and OP said, “We could not be happier!”
Unfortunately, Jacob’s health had steadily declined since the year before this story was posted.
OP wrote, “I took care of him. I was there for every surgery. His doctors told me he only has three months and suggested that he be at home with his family. At this point, Jacob already lived with us for three years. I do everything in my power to make him feel comfortable.”
A Grateful Heart
Jacob passed away two weeks before this story was posted. When the will was read, Monica got $5,000,000, and her two kids each got a trust fund worth $500,000.
Then, Jacob left Andy $3,000,000 and a cabin in Aspen worth $2,000,000; he also gave their son a trust fund worth $500,000. Because of how grateful Jacob was for OP, he left her $5,000,000 as well.
A Daughter Like No Other
In his will, Jacob wrote about how grateful he was that Andy found OP. He said he loved OP like his own daughter.
OP, being close to Jacob and caring for him all these years, cried while reading what was written.
A Jealous Brother-In-Law
Then, the day before this story was posted, OP received a call from Arthur demanding she share her inheritance with him. Arthur said he was “entitled” to half of OP’s inheritance because he’d been with Monica longer than OP had with Andy.
He also said they needed more money because they had more kids than OP and Andy.
An Unexpected Conversation
OP was shocked to be put on the spot like this by her brother-in-law. So, she told him that she’ll discuss things with Andy.
But Arthur wouldn’t have it. He was furious and started cursing at OP, saying she didn’t need to discuss it with Andy since it was only between him and OP.
Talking Behind Her Back
Arthur started talking to Andy’s cousins about Jacob’s unfair decision. He tried to brainwash them and tell them they should also get some of the inheritance.
OP shared, “Most of the cousins disagree with him, but there is one cousin, Jake, that feels he is entitled to some of the inheritance.”
Arthur and Jake accused OP of being a “greedy a**hole.”
Because of all the pressure surrounding her, Andy told OP that she could do whatever she wanted with the money. However, he reminded her that his dad wanted her to have it—not Arthur or Jake.
OP noted that her gut told her not to share the inheritance. But she’s also “sick” of the calls and texts.
She wrote, “I am still grieving, and I want to keep the peace in the family. I am torn. Am I the a**hole if I do not share my inheritance?”
Redditors’ Thoughts and Suggestions
For Redditors, Arthur is just entitled, greedy, and regretful. He turned his back on his father-in-law and now faces the consequences he deserves.
One wrote, “Not the a**hole. Unless they have 20 kids—I know OP said they have 2—$5,000,000 is enough, and they will be fine. Arthur is just rude and greedy and is regretting not allowing your father-in-law to live with him since he now thinks it was worth money. Don’t give him or the cousin anything.”
“Not the a**hole. Show Arthur the middle finger and tell him to f*** off. When it comes to money, everyone wants more—good way or bad way or by making someone guilty,” wrote another user.
Users also reminded OP that the inheritance is rightfully hers, and she shouldn’t let anyone barge into her life to destroy her security and peace of mind.
A woman commented, “Not the a**hole. It’s your inheritance because your father-in-law wanted you to have it. If he would’ve wanted something else, he would have arranged something else. Anyone that is harassing you, you should block immediately, and if they don’t stop harassing you, you should get a court order to make them stop harassing you. Don’t worry about keeping the peace; there are some people that, no matter how hard you try, you can’t do that with. Worry about you. Protect yourself, and if that means cutting them out of your life, then that’s what you need to do.”
What advice would you give OP? Could she have handled things differently?
