Obligations and Responsibilities
OP (Original Poster) has been married to her husband, Andy, for five years. Sadly, a year after their wedding, OP’s mother-in-law passed away.
Left alone, OP told Andy they should ask his dad, Jacob, to live with them or Andy’s sister, Monica. OP wrote, “I think it’s the Asian in me that makes me feel we are obligated to take care of my father-in-law.”
A Firm Refusal
So, Andy called his sister, Monica, to discuss their dad’s living arrangements. She lived in Maryland, while OP and her husband lived in Ohio.
Unfortunately, Monica’s husband, Arthur, was immediately against the idea. He told them they had no room in their house; they had an extra bedroom, which was reserved for guests.
Spinning the Tale
Arthur insisted they move Jacob to a retirement house. Then, he also started targeting Andy’s emotions, saying Jacob was busy and strict when they were younger, and therefore, they didn’t have the best relationship.
However, Andy said, “Yeah, Dad was strict, and sometimes, he said something cruel, but that is the past, and he is a different person now.”
Offering Up Their Home
Given Monica and Arthur’s stance, OP asked them if it would be alright if they asked Jacob if he wanted to move into OP and Andy’s place, and they said yes.
However, when the couple asked Jacob, he was grateful but declined the offer.

Four months after that conversation, OP gave birth to their baby boy. Jacob then visited them to meet his new grandson, and he changed his mind about his living arrangements.
