This Redditor was invited to Disney World for a girls’ trip involving her mother, sister, and daughter. Her husband never liked Disney, but when he found out she was going, he became enraged!
All Hail Mickey!
OP (Original Poster) discovered that her mother and sister planned an “all girls” trip to Disney World for the three of them and her eight-year-old daughter. The best part was her mother and sister were going to pay for everything!
But since it’s a girls’ trip, none of their husbands would be invited.
A Great Adventure
OP hadn’t been on a plane in 20 years, and her daughter had never been on a plane. She hadn’t even gone on a big vacation since childhood, and her daughter had never seen Disney World.
So, in all honesty, OP was really excited.
Grumpy Old Man
On the flip side, OP’s husband had made the fact he didn’t like Disney very clear to his mother-in-law. He had also been adamant before that they couldn’t afford to go, he couldn’t get off work, and he wouldn’t enjoy being there with her mother and sister anyway.
Like a Fairy Tale
So, when her mother and sister invited her, OP couldn’t help but say yes. She was extremely excited and knew she and her daughter would have a great time.
Her husband didn’t like the idea of going to Disney, so this would be their only opportunity to go.
The Nightmare Before Disney
However, upon finding out about the situation, her husband blew up, and they had a big fight. It got so bad her mom had even offered to pay for another ticket and bring him along!
Not Good Enough
OP’s mom even told her husband she’d buy him a one-day ticket so he could have come to see his daughter at Disney World if he didn’t want to stay for more than one day. However, he declined all of her invitations for the same reasons he stated in the past.
Nothing Is Over!
Even with his mother-in-law’s kind offer, he hadn’t stopped being angry at OP. It got so bad OP couldn’t even bring it up without him exploding into a rage about the trip.
The Goose and Gander
OP knew that her husband was jealous, and she understood. However, at the end of the day, he was the one who declined the invitation.
She added, “I get that he’s jealous, but if the shoe was on the other foot and his dad had planned a ‘guys’” trip with the kids, I would be supportive.”
Ruining the Vibe
The trip had been coming up, but now OP wasn’t feeling great about it. In fact, she felt guilty about being so excited and trying to plan her outfits and activities while her husband was clearly miserable.
A Shower of Sadness
OP’s husband had been so upset he had even asked her not to speak about the trip at all.
She wrote, “The trip is next week, and I’m feeling very guilty because I was getting excited—planning outfits, packing, and whatnot. He asked me not to even talk about it so he could pretend it was not happening.”
Missing the Point
With her husband so upset, OP doesn’t know if she even wants to go on the trip anymore. She’s even at the point where she’s considering calling her mother and sister and canceling the event.
What a Bummer!
Things had just gotten so bad between her and her husband that she couldn’t shake the feeling that she had somehow done something wrong.
OP asked, “Am I the a**hole for accepting the invite to a trip without him?”
The Community’s Take on the Matter
Redditors sprang to OP’s side and tried to convince her not to cancel her trip.
One echoed the sentiments of the community by saying, “Not the a**hole. Is it your husband’s common practice to control you by throwing temper tantrums and guilt trips? He doesn’t want to go. What is the reason he doesn’t want you to go?”
Another commented, “Not the a**hole. Clearly, he never wanted to go to Disney and never wanted to go on your girls’ trip. What he is doing is being childish and trying to ruin your trip before you even go. Don’t let him. He doesn’t want you to have any fun without him. Just to keep the peace, honor his request, and don’t talk about the trip with him beforehand. When you get back, he may or may not be interested in hearing about it.”
Some Redditors also noted that he would get a lot of free time when she was gone and that most men would jump at such an opportunity.
“Not the a**hole. He’s getting free time here. Most guys would be A-okay with a few family-free days to chill. What’s his problem here?” asked one Redditor, sharing a sentiment expressed by quite a few.
Was her husband acting immature? Should she have accepted the trip even though her husband wasn’t invited?
