OP (Original Poster) ruined her friend’s 16th birthday party by making it a cakeless one. Some think it was a petty move, but most believe she 100% did the right thing!
A Quirky Friend

OP shared that she had a very quirky friend. She was never diagnosed with anything in particular, but she had had to spell several things out for her over the years.
The Dress

OP then mentioned that her friend borrowed her dress a few months back. It was one of her favorite dresses, and she got it while on vacation a couple of years ago.
Her friend, apparently, loved the dress, as well—maybe too much.
Not Yours to Keep!

One day, OP just got money transferred to her account and received a message from her friend saying she would keep the dress because she loved it.
So, OP tried to talk to her to get the dress back. Her friend wouldn’t budge and said she already paid for it, so it didn’t matter.
A Small Business

Then, a week before this story was posted, said friend’s mom asked OP to bake a cake for her friend’s 16th birthday. OP mentioned she baked and sold cakes for cheap, and she accepted the order.
Reasoning With Her Friend’s Mom

On the day of OP’s friend’s birthday, she arrived at her house 15 minutes before the party started with the cake she had baked. She wanted to take the extra few minutes to talk to her friend’s mom.
She said, “Like I said, my friend is clueless sometimes, and I was hoping her mom would speak to her and get my dress back.”
Like Mother, Like Daughter

Sadly, things didn’t go as OP planned. It turns out that her friend’s mom also had the same mindset as her.
Her friend’s mom told her that as long as it was paid for, it didn’t matter. In her post, OP shared, “She told me to just move on as it was just a dress and that my friend really liked it. She told me as long as the dress was paid for, what am I complaining about.”
Taking Back the Cake

OP got upset and frustrated with how her friend’s mom reacted to the issue. So, she gave back the amount she was paid for the order, grabbed the cake, and took off!
Making a Point

She walked off with the cake, and her friend’s mom followed her, saying she was ruining the party. OP didn’t stop walking, and her friend’s mom said she shouldn’t be petty and she should give the cake back.
OP then tried to make her see that she was doing precisely what her friend’s mom said about the dress. She shared, “I just asked what she was complaining about as I had paid back the money.”
Cakeless Party

In the end, OP stood her ground and didn’t return the cake. So, her friend ended up having a cakeless birthday party!
Redditors’ Two Cents

Many found the whole thing hilarious. A top commenter said, “Not the a**hole, obviously, but I’m dead laughing at this. They can have the ‘so what? It’s paid for’ mentality, but if it comes back on them, it’s petty?”
Another shared, “You should have just stolen the dress back while at the party, and Venmo’d her money back to her. Now you have no friend and no dress.”
Good Job for Standing up for Yourself!

A Redditor gave OP an idea of how she should have replied to her friend not giving back her dress. He told her to say, “It was not for sale. It cannot be replaced.’”
Then he added, “She did not have a cakeless party; they just had to go to the store. Not the a**hole; you were openly disrespected and stuck up for yourself.”
Probably Petty and Immature, but Good for You!

This Redditor wanted to make it clear that what OP did was immature but also completely justified.
He commented, “Petty? Yes. A**hole? Yes. Justified? Also yes. It wasn’t the kindest or most mature thing to do, but hey, you don’t let people walk over you, so respect for that.”
Entitled Friend and Problematic Parenting

The community also wanted to shed light on OP’s friend’s and her mom’s issues.
One said, “Your friend is entitled AF, but her mother is the real piece of work here—what the hell kind of parenting is this? Her kid borrows something, refuses to give it back, and thinks that it’s okay to just pay you and keep what she wants? She stole from you; her mother backed her up, so you canceled the job and gave her a refund. They are not entitled to your services in addition to stealing your dress.”
What do you think OP should say to her friend—if she should say anything at all? What advice would you give her?
