She Went Behind Her Relatives’ Backs and Got a DNA Test to Prove She Was Her Grandfather’s Biological Granddaughter. Now She’s Set to Inherit $4,200,000 While They Only Get $5,000!

The only way to get their hands on OP’s (Original Poster) grandfather’s immense fortune is to get a DNA test. It’s easy enough, so why are they all refusing to take one?

Estranged Grandfather

OP is 21 years old, and her paternal grandfather recently passed away.

However, they weren’t that close since he divorced OP’s grandmother when her dad was only 13. Her grandfather also barely spoke to her dad or his siblings for a few years after the divorce.

Growing Distant

OP’s dad and her aunts and uncles never knew why their parents divorced. They were also heartbroken that they lost their dad just like that.

She wrote, “My aunts and uncle never know why and felt really rejected by my grandfather’s lack of interest in seeing them on a regular basis.”

Getting Reconnected

Five years after the divorce, when OP’s dad was 18, he reached out to OP’s grandfather and reconnected with him. Eventually, OP’s grandfather started mending his broken bond with his other children; he even paid for their college tuition!

Even so, OP’s grandfather and grandmother’s relationship never improved. They were still “pretty bitter” toward each other; at this point, they still didn’t tell anyone about their divorce.

On the flip side, OP did like her grandfather somewhat. However, she’s much closer to her maternal side, especially since her aunts and uncles despised her mom.

For her, it seemed her uncle’s wife didn’t like her either. She said, “Pretty sure that chick is racist, and I’m biracial.”

Never Got Any Better

OP’s paternal grandfather and grandmother never stopped being “openly hostile” to each other until OP’s dad passed away when she was four.

However, now that her grandfather had also passed away, the secret behind the divorce came out when the will was read.

Multiple Affairs

It turns out that OP’s paternal grandmother had an affair, and when she was pregnant with OP’s aunt, she didn’t know who the real father was. However, she chose OP’s grandfather because “he was the most financially stable.”

She wrote, “My grandfather didn’t know for the longest time until he caught my grandmother in another affair and found an old letter her first lover sent that she kept.”

He Couldn’t Take It

OP’s grandfather couldn’t take the betrayal, so he immediately filed for divorce. He also used “every legal, although not very ethical, trick in the book” to “hoard” as many assets and resources as possible.

DNA Test Requirement

In the will, OP’s grandfather required everyone to take a DNA test before they could claim their share of the inheritance. It was an enormous total of around $4,200,000, including savings, properties, and other assets.

OP shared, “Before each child could claim their share of the inheritance, they would have to take a DNA test to prove they were his biological child. To any child that refused the test or they were proven not to be biologically related to my grandfather, then they would just be given $5,000 while the rest would be allocated to the children who were proven to be his biological child.”

Adamant Refusal

OP’s grandmother was furious. She didn’t want her children to take a DNA test and denied everything OP’s grandfather accused her of.

She told everyone that the letter provided was fake. OP shared, “She’s too insulted by the mere accusation and thinks that if her children do it, then they’re doubting her integrity while also giving into my grandpa’s manipulation ‘from beyond the grave.’”

Trying to Find a Loophole

Everyone had a year to comply with the will’s instructions and take a DNA test. As of now, though there was a lot of fighting, OP’s relatives wanted to present a “united front,” try to find a loophole, claim the money, and take the DNA test after.

For OP, however, this might not be the best approach. She said, “I wasn’t a part of the decision to not take the DNA test. Everyone else had been having meetings and just told me in a very authoritative way what was going to happen. Like my opinion didn’t matter.”

Acting Out of Spite

OP tried to talk to them about it but got ignored; they shut her down twice! However, OP broke when her uncle’s wife accused her of not being her dad’s child.

She wrote, “My uncle’s wife even accused me of not really being my dad’s kid, so I shouldn’t get any money anyway. That p***** me off, so I just took the DNA test out of spite, and I am my grandfather’s biological grandchild, so as of right now, I’m getting most of the money.”

When they found out, everyone was furious. OP said she started a “domino effect” where everyone is beginning to fight everyone.

Her anger when her uncle’s wife said she wasn’t her dad’s child is starting to wear off, and she’s starting to feel guilty about what she had done, especially since it was affecting her cousins.

It Was the Last Straw

However, OP was hurt by what her aunt said, especially since it wasn’t the first time they insulted her mom.

She said, “My grandmother, aunts, and uncles never liked my mom and were always passive-aggressive toward her. Even after my dad died, they still weren’t very nice to her. What my aunt said was the final straw that broke the camel’s back.”

What Happens Next?

OP explained that if she were the only one to agree to a DNA test, she’d receive most of her grandfather’s fortune. If this were the case, she planned to set up a small trust fund for her cousins.

“The only person I would 100% not give a solid dime to is my uncle’s wife,” wrote OP.

She further explained that if no one agreed to do so, assuming there wasn’t a loophole in the will, each person would get $5,000. The rest would’ve gone to charities OP’s grandfather felt deserved it.

What Redditors Think

Redditors said OP was not the a**hole for taking the DNA test. In fact, people think her relatives should take the test to get the “game” over with.

“Not the a**hole. This was a stupid game, and everyone won the stupid prize. The family sounds ridiculous, and your aunt opened her yap and got a mouthful of her own crap to chew on. It sounds like there’s a lot going on, but if they want to fight over the will, it’s likely because some of them already know they don’t fit into the terms and just want the money. They could all be related, for all they know. You’re just abiding by the terms of the will, and in the end, you also got a little back at someone who was unnecessarily cruel to you. Too bad for her,” said one user.

Another commented, “The OP said that if they refused to take the test or were proven not related, they would get the $5,000. So even if they take the test and are not related, they still get the $5,000. Honestly, the only reason not to take the test is because of pride and because they feel attacked that they need to jump through a couple of hoops to prove they are related. This is definitely an instance of ‘cutting off the nose to spite the face.’ Not taking the test for no real reason and still getting the $5,000 when they have a chance at much more for not much additional work.”

She Knows

Some also speculated that OP’s relatives knew they weren’t her grandfather’s biological children, which is why they were so against a DNA test.

“The only reason OP got tested as a grandchild is because her dad died. OP’s aunts and uncles are still alive. I think it’s just because she’s scared or probably knows she or her husband, depending on which aunt we’re talking about, isn’t her granddad’s biological child, and she wants to rack up the $5,000 instead of nothing,” commented one user.

Do you think any of OP’s aunts and uncles are lying? Do you think she’s wrong to make a move?
