She Refused to Leave the Townhouse She Inherited to Her Estranged Family, so She’s Willing It to Her Best Friend Instead. Now Her Grand-Aunt Is Saying She’s a Shameful Jerk

OP (Original Poster) had no close relatives left. So, she willed the inheritance she received to her best friend so that should she pass away, her estate won’t go to the state!

OP is a 23-year-old who doesn’t have any close relatives. She never knew her dad or his side of the family, and her mom had been estranged from OP’s maternal side after some “major family drama” that happened before she was born.

Her mom cut off contact with everyone except her mother and two of her nephews.

She wrote, “I don’t know what happened, and now it’s too late to ask.”

OP’s grandmother already passed away more than a decade ago. Then, both of OP’s mom’s nephews, whom she kept in touch with, also died seven years before this story was posted in a terrible car crash.

Unfortunately, not even OP’s mom was still around, as she passed away three years before this story was posted in another accident. OP said she was left “practically alone.”

The New Owner

With her mom’s death, OP became the sole heir to some of her assets and a townhouse in the countryside, which has been passed down from her grandmother.

She wrote, “It’s a beautiful house with a big garden that was in the family for some generations, as far as I know.”

In Need of Some TLC

The house wasn’t in good condition and would require some repairs, which OP was slowly working on.

The house and the money needed to be put into it wasn’t OP’s issue, though.

The Crippling Fear of Death

Since her mom passed, OP has struggled with the “concept of mortality and the suddenness of it.”

OP shared, “In my country, if after the death of an individual, no relative claims the inheritance, it would all go to the state.”

The Only Solution

She hated the idea of the house disappearing into “nothingness,” so she decided to draft a will wherein the house would be left to her best friend.

OP’s best friend was “cool” with the idea, saying she didn’t care if she was in OP’s will or not. But if the gesture would give OP peace of mind, then she’s 100% agreeing to it.

Coming Back Into the Picture

When she drafted the will, OP “truly thought” that she was all alone and no other relatives knew or cared about her.

So, you could imagine her surprise when her great-aunt—her grandmother’s sister—reached out to her.

Mending Broken Bridges

OP shared that she was “vaguely aware” that some time before her mom died, OP’s great-aunt was in contact with her.

She wrote, “Like a simple call once a month, maybe my maternal side was trying to mend bridges, I never cared and never asked.”

Distance and Differences

She noted that her great-aunt was nice but had some “old-fashioned” beliefs. OP also discovered that she had a lot of distant relatives, but almost all of them lived far away from her.

Judgmental Actions

Then, a couple of days before this story was posted, OP and her great-aunt were talking, and it turned into an “emotional conversation.” During this discussion, the townhouse OP inherited came up, and she asked OP what she planned to do with it.

OP shared, “I, distraught with emotions, stupidly let it slip that it’s in my will to go to my best friend. My grand-aunt instantly blew up at me, saying that I have no right to give out a family house to some stranger.”

Mean and Hurtful Remarks

OP’s great-aunt went on to accuse her of being an “a**hole.” She also said that OP’s late mom would be “ashamed” of her because she was giving it to someone instead of her other relatives.

At this, OP started crying, and she hung up. She was so hurt and confused that she had ignored all her great-aunt’s calls and messages since then.

Doubts and a Confused State of Mind

OP’s world turned upside down with the existence of her great-aunt, and because of that, she’s unsure about how to move forward.

She wrote, “Was I really an a**hole to do so? I’m starting to doubt my decision. It’s not like I can’t change my will if I want to, but I don’t really know any of my relatives, and my best friend was my rock ever since my mother died. I feel like she is more my family than any of them.”

Redditors’ Opinions

For Redditors, OP needed to be cautious. After all, her great-aunt might have only contacted her to get her share of the inheritance.

A top commenter wrote, “Not the a**hole. I suspect the only reason she reached out was the house since you do not—yet—have a family of your own. Go no contact; you do not need such people in your life. If she continues harassing you, file a report.”

“Not the a**hole. She’s only reaching out for the house. Don’t be fooled. If she really wanted a connection, she would have talked to you a long time ago. Go no contact and keep your best friend in the will. She’s more family to you than anyone else,” another woman agreed.

She’s Taking Advantage of You!

Though OP’s emotional, she shouldn’t lose her head, especially at this moment. She needs to be wary of her great-aunt’s intentions.

A Redditor said, “Not the a**hole. The vultures are circling you before you are even dead. If this aunt had reached out to you years ago and had been in constant contact with you over the years, then it would be a different story. But my guess is that she reached out just to find out who would get the property. You willed it to a friend who has been there for you. You might want to check with an attorney to make sure the will is airtight, and the relatives can’t break it after you are gone, though.”

Another person pointed out, “Not the a**hole. If this woman has never been in your life until now, she isn’t family. She’s an opportunist who thinks she is entitled to your estate because of a common drop of DNA. Your best friend is your family, and one day, you may have children of your own. Family is what you make it.”

What advice would you give OP? Do you think her great-aunt is trying to take advantage of her?
