Her mother wants to sell her late father’s house and split the profit between them, including her half-siblings and stepdad. But it’s her money, and she doesn’t want to share!
Maternal Half-Siblings
OP (Original Poster), a 24-year-old woman, is 1 of 3 of her mom’s children. Her mother had her sister before she married OP’s dad.
The Good Man That He Was
Before OP’s father passed away, he stepped up as her sister’s father figure even though her sibling’s dad was and still is in the picture.
Once More
When OP’s dad died, her mother started dating someone else, and that’s when she had OP’s brother. But eventually, that relationship didn’t last, and the guy moved away and left his child behind.
Her Dad’s Inheritors
OP was three years old when her dad passed away, and from what her mom has told her for most of her life, her father left his house to her and her mother. As far as OP knows, both she and her mother are in her dad’s will.
She said, “I haven’t really been interested in the details until now.”
Mother’s Proposal
Several days prior, OP and her mom were discussing possibly selling the house, and the latter began talking about splitting it among herself, OP, her siblings, and maybe some of it to her now stepdad, as a “thank you” for taking care of them all this time.
Keep Her Share
OP understands the “thanking” her stepdad part, but splitting everything evenly with her siblings didn’t sit right with her. It’s possible they will still have some sort of inheritance from their own fathers.
Keeping Her Mouth Shut
Despite disagreeing with the idea, OP hasn’t mentioned anything about it to her mom yet as she doesn’t want to come across as the “a**hole.” Aside from that, OP grew up in an environment where talking about such matters and having such an opinion about inheritance problems was always frowned upon.
She Has Been Judged
In the past, OP mentioned something about the house being her property and not wanting to sell it at the time. Back then, OP’s mother commented on her “not being a nice person” for saying that, so OP just apologized and let it go then, but the problem has resurfaced.
Miles and Miles Away
In an update, OP clarified that she and her family moved to a different country, and her late father’s house was rented out for several years at a time and is currently unoccupied.
None of His Concern
Her mother met her stepdad in the country they currently live in. He has never been in or lived in the house in question, but he has been present in their lives and has helped them with some things.
Besides, OP’s stepdad has his own house and assets, so it’s unlikely he ever asked or expected any money.
House Budget
OP’s late father’s house was paid off with the money her dad left, and then the utilities were taken care of using the rental money, or her mom handled it when the house wasn’t bringing any income.
As One of the Successors
Furthermore, OP said that if she’s not entitled to the house, she’ll gladly back off and let her mother do as she pleases. Still, OP hasn’t had the chance to talk to her mom but said she’ll do so later that day.
What People Have to Say
Redditors are suspicious and think OP might be the only inheritor of the house. They suggested she contact a lawyer and find out what’s really going on.
The top commenter wrote, “I’d be interested in seeing if the house was actually left to you and your mom or if she’s just been telling you that. Something tells me he left it in your name only.”
Another person said, “Not the a**hole. I think you need to contact a lawyer, who should be able to access your father’s will and find out exactly what’s going on. Your father may have left the house to only you, so your mom would have no legal right to sell it. There’s no way her son should get any of the inheritance money as this wasn’t his father’s money.”
What’s Yours Is Yours
The community agreed that OP has every right to keep what she’s entitled to. According to them, she should have a genuine conversation with her mom.
“Not the a**hole. It’s your inheritance. You should have a say in how it is distributed. It’s understandable that you don’t feel comfortable splitting it evenly with your siblings, especially if they will already receive inheritances from their respective fathers. Have an open and honest conversation with your mom about your concerns,” a Redditor wrote.
Someone else commented, “Not the a**hole. If the house was left to both of you, then 50% belongs to you. Tell your mom she is welcome to do whatever she wants with her 50%, but you won’t be sharing your half.”
Should OP share her part of the inheritance? What would you do if you were in her position?
