A man just wanted to get his daily exercise in. However, he never expected a woman would like him to get kicked out of the gym just because of his presence!
Normal Living Conditions
OP (Original Poster) is a 26-year-old male working in a “remote location.” Because of the nature of his work, he stayed at a camp with around 600 people.
Gym Perks
Although he’s far from the city, OP had no shortage of workout options.
He said, “There is an attached gym that is a five-minute walk from my room.”
Decent Offerings
Though it wasn’t like big gyms in the city, it was still of “decent size.” There was even a basketball court, two weight rooms, and a track on the second floor!
Much-Needed Time Off
One day, OP had the day off. Instead of wasting the day doing nothing, he decided to kill time at the gym.
One on One
When OP got there, he realized he wasn’t alone. There was one other person in the gym—a woman!
Same Interests
OP and the woman were both in the weight room, as they had similar routines and exercises to go through.
Gym Altercations
He was doing his own thing when, suddenly, after he finished the second set of his first exercise, the woman approached him.
Off-Putting Requests
When the woman neared, she told OP she felt “uncomfortable” being alone in the gym with a guy. Then, she asked OP if he could leave.
Unreasonable Demands
OP was fine moving to another part of the gym. However, he wouldn’t leave.
To him, it was “unreasonable” for the woman to ask him to leave just because she was “intimidated” by his presence.
Off With a Huff
When OP told the woman he wasn’t leaving, she gave him an “annoyed look.” Then, she stormed off and left the gym.
In a Set
OP had already started with his workout and didn’t want to stop and come back later on. However, at the same time, he recognized that the gym was only a five-minute walk from his room.
He explained, “It would have only been a minor inconvenience for me to leave and come back later since she was there first.”
The Community’s Two Cents
First, Redditors were not entirely convinced that the woman was intimidated by OP.
The top commenter wrote, “So, maybe I’m not an expert in intimidation, but when I’m intimidated by, or afraid of, someone, I don’t walk up to them when we’re alone and tell them to leave a public space because I said so. That’s the behavior of a person displaying confidence and self-assurance. You know, the literal opposite of intimidation.”
The same person added, “Not the a**hole. And for the record, people’s insecurities and fears are their own responsibility to manage. She doesn’t have more of a right to a public space than you do.”
Pettiness at an All-Time High
Others commented on some hilarious lines highlighting how fake the woman’s “intimidation” or fear is.
“‘I’m so scared that I’m going to come over here and start s*** with you.’ Not the a**hole, said one woman.”
Another wrote, “‘You scare me. Maybe I should anger you.’ Not the a**hole.”
Two Sides
While people don’t think OP’s a jerk, some also said that the woman’s fear wasn’t wholly unjustified.
A Redditor said, “If OP is at a pipeline man camp, then the resources for s***** assault are pretty dismal, especially compared to the rates of s***** harassment and assault. Pipeline man camps are also disproportionately tied to higher rates of s***** trafficking, rape, and murder of, in particular Indigenous women in the US and Canada. I don’t think that OP is in the wrong, but I don’t think this was necessarily unjustified paranoia on the woman’s part.”
However, another countered this comment, saying, “That’s a lot of ‘ifs’ to justify her behavior, though. It is terrible that there are still environments where that sort of behavior exists, but even if they are in this sort of place, it doesn’t justify open hostility toward all men. OP was simply working out; that’s not intimidating or threatening. To me, it didn’t sound like paranoia or like she truly did feel threatened or intimidated. It sounded like she simply didn’t want him there, like she felt he was invading what she considered to be ‘her space,’ and invented an excuse to try and force him to leave. If anything, she’s the one trying to intimidate him.”
Do you think the woman’s request was justified? What would you do if you were in OP’s shoes?
