This Redditor would not back down from a challenge, nor would he let someone take advantage of him. He had the perfect revenge in mind and executed it perfectly!
Walking Down Memory Lane

OP (Original Poster) shared what happened when a rental company tried to take advantage of him years ago. His story should serve as a warning that companies must try to be as honest as possible in any situation!
Fond Memories

He shared that he and his girlfriend, who was now his wife, usually went to Asheville for a vacation, and they booked cabins through a rental company.
OP wrote, “She grew up there and loved it, plus she had friends and family in the area that we would visit while there.”
Rules, Rules, Rules

One of the company’s rules was that “no extra guest was allowed to stay overnight, or there would be a fee.” This rule wasn’t a problem for the couple since they never planned on having someone else stay with them.
Having Friends Over

However, this time, they invited a couple of his wife’s friends over to hang out. They arrived around 7 or 8 in the evening and only left around 11.
Ending the Trip

The couple finished the trip, had a great time, and went home. They never thought they’d encounter a problem with the rental company.
OP shared that a couple of days after they got home, he got an email from a woman in the rental company claiming that their maintenance guy saw that they had a couple of people stay overnight.
Extra Fees

Because of the maintenance guy’s claims, they were being charged an additional $200 for “breaking occupancy rules.” They had several discussions where OP tried to tell them that no one stayed overnight; he explained that their friends left around 11 in the evening.
Changing the Definition of Occupancy

However, the rental company wouldn’t have it. OP was told that “occupancy is anyone being in the cabin at all.”
This made no sense to OP, so he looked up the legal definition of the term, which the woman didn’t take well. She told OP that “it didn’t matter” and that they would continue to charge him the extra $200.
Time for Revenge

OP, his wife, and their friends with 20 different Google accounts left 1-star reviews on the company’s Google page. This took a toll on their rating and brought it down significantly.
He shared, “Someone higher up must have gotten wind of this, and they knew exactly who did it.”
Scrambling to Make Things Right

Within a couple of hours, OP got several emails from the woman he was talking to and her supervisor. They apologized for the misunderstanding and asked how they could get OP and his friends to remove the bad reviews.
However, OP told them what happened was “clearly not a misunderstanding.”
Pushing Further

OP didn’t simply give in. He ended up being offered $200 off on their next visit if they took the reviews down.
He also got refunded the extra $200 they had charged him, plus the $100 he paid for their trip!
Insights From Redditors

Some Redditors shared their own experiences, and they all think that what OP did was justified!
One shared, “A friend of mine and their friend actually got kicked out of an apartment they were staying in because a friend of theirs was visiting and was there at 10 in the evening without the intention of staying. The owner saw them hanging out on the patio—not even in their room—and threw them out because ‘no extra overnights.’ After serious complaints to booking.com, they got a full refund, so that meant three free days on the beach. Yes, I get it. No extra free guests can sleep, but f*** you if you think no one can visit.”
A Good Way to Lose Business

People agree that it makes no sense for companies to ban visiting friends or family. How these companies act is a great way to make people lose their trust, in turn making them lose business.
“That makes no sense, and it’s a good way to lose a lot of business if you’re going to ban people from invited guests to visit them when they’re most likely in a location temporarily and could have relatives and friends they don’t get to see often,” shared one user. Another wrote, “And it’s so easy to check. Most already have a Ring camera, but any camera outside the property can attest if someone spends the night or not.”
Can’t Argue With Stupidity

Some users were appalled by the rental company’s behavior.
One said, “Sometimes, you just can’t argue with stupidity. I enjoyed how you were able to correct the issue. I get a visual image in my head while reading of when she realizes she royally screwed the pooch.” Another commented, “Arguing with stupid is near impossible. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.”
You Did Great!

A handful of Redditors commended OP for a job well done, too!
“‘Clearly not a misunderstanding’ is the best part of your stance,” said one Redditor. Another said, “She only apologized because she saw the reviews. She wasn’t apologizing for her lies. Typical f****** people trying to screw over hard-working folks like you and your wife. I’m glad you took your sweet, sweet revenge over something that this b***h could’ve avoided.”
What do you think of OP’s revenge? Do you think the rental company deserved it?
