She and her friends went to a restaurant to have dinner. When they were seated, none of the workers came to wait on them, and they were ultimately denied service!
A Mutual Agreement
OP (Original Poster), who goes by the TikTok handle Büeli, stitched a video from another TikToker who stated that nobody is obligated to tip anyone.
Büeli agreed and said, “This girl is absolutely gorgeous, and she’s absolutely correct.”
As a Service Industry Worker
She shared that she is a tattoo artist who makes a living off tips, so she encourages people to do so. However, she also acknowledged that tipping is optional and that she’ll understand if she only receives the same amount as the set price.
The Other Side of the Coin
At the same time, though, Büeli is also aware and recognizes that many other people do not feel the same way.
A Personal Experience
To give a better context, Büeli shared an experience she had with some of her friends. At this point in the video, Büeli told the story of how she and her friends were denied service because one of them was known at the restaurant for being a “non-tipper.”
A Good Night to Hang Out
A day before posting her video, she visited a restaurant with someone she loves. When they were already seated, they decided to invite another friend.
Are We Invisible?
When their friend arrived, none of the servers came to assist them anymore. After a while, the manager approached their table and talked to them.
A Tipping Issue
Apparently, they didn’t want to serve Büeli and her friends anymore. So, they asked why, and they were told that tipping was a big reason.
Büeli knows what it’s like to be in the service industry, as she is a part of it; that’s why she makes sure to tip everywhere she goes.
However, as she said prior, there are times when her friends might not do the same, given their own beliefs and principles. Or, in some cases, they simply could not afford to do so.
Something to Think About
Büeli had a mixed opinion on the matter, as she’s also someone on the receiving end of clients’ tips. So, at the end of her video, Büeli left an important question for the viewers.
She asked, “Do you feel like this is a good enough reason to deny service to somebody for the rest of their life if it’s based on tips and the service isn’t always up to par?”
Some members of the community stated that the workers wanting tips are not really the problem. Instead, the establishments that pay their employees unreasonable wages are.
A TikToker wrote, “Servers should not need to rely on tips, but the reality is establishments incorporate it into their pay. So sometimes, the base wage is two dollars per hour.”
Another one said, “It’s not on us as the customers to get dogged out because their employers don’t pay them a proper wage.”
It’s the Quality of Service
Some TikTokers also shared how they tip workers and what it’s based on.
“I tip based solely on service. I don’t tip just because I’m ‘supposed to.’ I don’t go with the percentages suggested if I get amazing service. I overtip,” one user said.
A commenter came to a theory that the servers’ reason for denying service might be more than just not tipping.
Someone said, “I bet there’s more to the story than we’re hearing, and we’re only getting one side. I’ve had 40 years managing restaurants. I bet tipping really isn’t really the issue here. All the servers knew her friend. I’d like to know the real reason her friend has a reputation.”
No Tip, No Service
Then, some people suggested that someone shouldn’t dine if they cannot tip their server.
“Servers do not work for free. If you are that cheap or ‘cannot afford to tip,’ go to the drive-thru for a value meal. For your information, businesses have the right to refuse service, and, in this case, I applaud the manager for taking care of their employees,” a commenter wrote.
Another said, “My mom always says don’t go out to eat if you can’t afford to tip.”
No to Tipping
Instead of relying on tips, a commenter suggested that people should get a better job.
One person said, “No loss going elsewhere. Tipping has gotten to the point that they think you owe your money to them. I’m going to say it out loud: you do not have a right to my money. Get a better job and stop whining.”
What about you? Do you think tipping is customary?
