His half-brother and half-sister always took advantage of the kind people helping them, especially his dad. Since they’re awful people, they shouldn’t be surprised they’re not getting any inheritance!
Good Dad, Bad Dad
OP (Original Poster), a 20-year-old man, has a different father than his 36-year-old brother and 35-year-old sister. He said that, at the very least, his half-siblings’ dad was a “deadbeat dad.”
When his half-brother and half-sister were still teenagers, their father left them and never helped them achieve anything. Compared to that, OP’s father was the complete opposite.
A Father to Everyone
Before OP was born, his father bought each of his siblings a vehicle and put $5,000 each in two accounts to help with their college. Then, even after OP was born, his dad continued caring for all of them.
However, OP’s siblings started to take advantage of the help his father generously gave them.
Up to No Good
His half-sister didn’t like the car that was bought for her, so she sold it and used her $5,000 college fund to buy another one, which was already broken in just a month. Eventually, OP’s dad bought her another one, but she wasn’t happy that it was a “downgrade” from what she had the first time.
In his sophomore year in high school, OP’s half-brother started doing drugs and wasn’t caught until he began to steal money to support his unhealthy habit.
All Help Wasted
OP’s dad and grandmother contributed to pay for his half-sister’s tuition in photography school, which she dropped out of after three months. His dad also paid for his half-brother’s welding school, which he finished but never made a career out of.
Nonstop Help
That wasn’t the end of OP’s dad helping his siblings. He also put a downpayment on OP’s half-sister’s car and house.
His dad even helped his half-brother get a good job to support his family after getting married and having children!
Over a Little Dispute
However, OP’s half-brother quit his job after fighting with a coworker.
According to OP, “It was not an actual fight. The dude p***** on his work clothes, and he didn’t want to stand up to him.”
Showing Some Attitude
On the other hand, his half-sister started being rude to him and his dad whenever they visited. She moved to a new place that was quite far, and her attitude hasn’t been the same since.
A Successful Businessman
Though OP’s half-brother’s and half-sister’s lives were falling apart, OP’s dad continued to help them. He explained that his dad runs his own business, which he offered the three of them to be part of.
So, OP grew up working for his father, but his half-brother and half-sister never helped. When his half-brother lost job after job, his dad gave him the opportunity to be the manager of a branch of his business out of state, and he agreed to do it.
Enticing Benefits
The job included a house, a new $50,000 car, all expenses paid, and a credit card for food, gas, and groceries with a $500 weekly allowance. As OP said, it was “one hell of a setup, to say the least.”
Back to His Old Ways
OP’s half-brother lasted in the job for three years before he and his father visited and found him making meth in the house’s garage. Because of that, he got kicked out, and since then, OP has helped his dad take care of that branch.
After that incident, he had never seen his half-brother.
Intolerable Behavior
At some point, OP’s dad decided enough’s enough and also cut off contact with his half-sister. He grew tired of her snide remarks toward him, OP, and OP’s mom.
Family Fortune
As for the inheritance, OP’s parents have a trust stating anything from his dad’s business goes to him as his half-siblings wanted no part of it. For his mom’s trust, he and his half-sister will have half each and nothing for his half-brother, who got completely cut off.
However, recent surprising events made OP the sole inheritor of both estates.
A Sister’s Evil Scheme
OP’s grandmother has dementia, and she will most likely be gone in three years. So, they have been trying to get her affairs fixed.
When they found his grandma’s trust, they saw that everything was being left to his half-sister. OP wrote, “We knew my sister had been coming to visit her recently, and it turns out she had a lawyer type up a new trust and tricked my grandma into signing it.”
The Way It Should Be
After discovering that shocking news, they asked his grandma, who was completely unaware of the changes. So, they returned to the lawyer and put everything in his mom’s name as she was an only child.
OP added, “Now my sister gets nothing of my mom’s either and is asking me to share when I inherit everything. My total inheritance will be around the $15,000,000 mark. Am I the a**hole for not sharing my inheritance?”
Redditors Speak Their Minds
Redditors pointed out that every good opportunity was presented to OP’s siblings, but they decided to waste them. So, it’s not OP’s fault they wouldn’t receive any inheritance.
A Redditor wrote, “Not the a**hole. Your sister and brother are thieves and bad ones at that. Luckily, they have had the opportunity to be set up comfortably for life, and they chose to squander the opportunity. Keep the money and feed them dust.”
Another said, “Not the a**hole. Why give them money he’s going to put up his nose, and she’s gonna crash into a tree? They’re crooks—hardcore. Any money within grabbing distance is going to be grabbed and squandered. And they’re going to be pulling cons on you for as long as they can. Your father gave them more than enough chances. Don’t make them part of your inheritance. Make the lesson he should have learned part of your inheritance.”
A Deceitful Woman
OP’s half-sister was cruel and horrible; some Redditors even say that what she did was elder abuse!
A commenter wrote, “Not the a**hole. Do not give her a cent. What your half-sister tried to do is elder abuse. Make sure your mom is your grandmother’s power of attorney for care and finances.”
Another one said, “Not the a**hole. Your sister has some nerve to even ask that. Honestly, where does she get all that audacity from? Not only did she bite the hand that fed her several times, but she also took advantage of an ill woman. I am so glad your father finally opened his eyes and realized they were not worth his kindness. Stand your ground and do not give her a dime.”
A Piece of Advice
Then, one user commented on what OP and his parents needed to remember. This user has been going through his own inheritance battle, and his comment would be really helpful to OP and anyone else going through something similar.
He said, “I’m going to give you and your parents some advice here from someone who has been fighting over a will for over a year. Buckle in; this is a big one. Keep. Everything. Documented. The brother’s drug use, the sister’s manipulation of your grandmother, the selling of the car—which demonstrated inability to properly manage finances—all of it. Don’t just write it down; have that s*** organized and categorized because if they try to contest the will, you want to waste as little time paying your lawyer in meetings as possible. You want to have everything ready and able to be presented. Do OP’s siblings deserve not to inherit any money? What are your opinions on this?”
The same Redditor added, “Also, under no circumstances should you share with them. There is a very good host of reasons why they aren’t being included. Your sister is clearly a manipulator who will literally trick a sick old lady into signing over assets to her because she has no clue how to manage and build them herself. Your brother is an addict who is going to p*** it all away on drugs. You have nothing to feel guilty about if their own mother is saying they should not be touching that money with a 10-foot pole.”
Do you think OP’s half-siblings deserve a second chance? What would you do?
