He Refuses to Share the Inheritance He’ll Receive From His Grandfather With His Brother, Who’s Greedy and Blinded by Money. Now He’s Livid, Accusing Him of Being “Selfish” and “Controlling!”

His stepbrother isn’t even related to his dying grandfather, yet he has the nerve to demand an inheritance. Who does he think he is?

Different Sides of the Family

OP (Original Poster) has a 30-year-old biological brother, P, a 25-year-old stepbrother, K, and a 17-year-old half-sister. OP’s mother died, and his dad married his second wife when K was five.

He wrote, “There was a lot of animosity between my mom’s family and my dad. They had no contact except to arrange weekly visits.”

Occasional Interactions

While growing up, K had little contact with OP’s maternal family. Eventually, they only interacted through small birthday gifts or meetings at huge family events—nothing more.

He had, however, his paternal grandparents, whom he visited and received gifts from.

Sadly, OP shared that his maternal grandfather has been given a terminal diagnosis, and they had to sell his house for him so he could enter hospice.

He was already in its end stages, and in his will, he left everything to P and OP.

Though the will was clear, K has been asking for his inheritance, and soon after that, OP got a call from the hospice saying they kept receiving calls from someone requesting to speak to his grandfather, who everyone knows has been heavily deaf. They were worried that it was a scammer, but it was only K.

OP wrote, “He then admitted he wanted to keep in touch so he’d ‘remember him in his will.’ I told him it was his choice who he left money to, and it wasn’t likely. He blew up on me, calling me selfish and controlling and saying I favored our brother.”

A few hours later, OP received messages from his stepmom, whom his dad divorced a few years back. She said he needed to “evaluate his priorities” and that the money would be really helpful to them.

From One to Three

His stepmother wanted him to pressure his granddad to change his will or divide his inheritance into three and share it with his stepbrother and half-sister. It was just crazy!

Miserable Lives?

For context, OP explained that K was constantly being let go at work because of his attitude, and OP’s stepmom refused to work full-time or even ask her boyfriend to contribute to the rent.

On the other hand, his half-sister has no interest in the money.

All things considered, OP wouldn’t be so annoyed if K really had a relationship with his grandfather. However, the issue is that not once in his life has he tried to contact his granddad before this.

To add to this, OP explained that K’s own grandma left him a considerable amount. But he blew everything, and he didn’t share it with anyone.

For 20 years, OP cared for his grandfather, including personal care and housekeeping for the last 5 years—all while working full-time.

So, was he wrong for staying firm and not giving his stepbrother any money?

Redditors’ Opinions on the Matter

The only thing on Redditors’ minds is: how could OP’s stepbrother and stepmother claim money they’re obviously not entitled to? Since OP’s grandpa is not K’s, he has no right to demand an inheritance.

The top commenter wrote, “Not the a**hole. This is f****** bizarre. It’s not his grandfather; it’s not his inheritance. He and your stepmother need to kick rocks.”

Another person added, “I’m not even sure any claim they could make would have any legal standing. Regardless, they should respect your grandfather’s decision. If he wanted to leave it all to a neighbor’s chihuahua, that is his right and none of their business. That being said, the prospect of money and inheritance turns some people into the worst a**holes. Luckily, they have no right to claim this bulls***.”

No Sense of Shame

People are absolutely repulsed with how OP’s stepbrother and stepmom acted and said it’s only right for him not to give them anything.

A Redditor wrote, “Not the a**hole. Wow. What a piece of work. He and his mother are disgusting and shameless. Do not give them a dime. That’s your money.”

Legal Actions

Redditors advised OP on what he should do to prevent his stepbrother from doing anything to his grandfather.

A commenter wrote, “Not the a**hole. And if you haven’t already, tell the hospice or hospital to keep them from contacting your grandfather. I would also alert your grandfather’s lawyer about this situation.”

Another person said, “First, call your grandfather’s lawyer if you can find out who it is. Tell them about your stepbrother’s efforts to get your grandfather to change his will. This will alert him to watch out for fraud and elder abuse. Second, you have no obligation to give those folks any money. If you don’t want to, don’t. You don’t have to explain anything to anybody.”

What Grandpa Wants

Lastly, people reiterated that since it is OP’s grandpa’s money, only he could decide who or where it goes.

“Not the a**hole. It’s up to your grandfather to decide the fate of his estate. It’s his last wishes, not yours,” someone wrote.

Another person said, “Not the a**hole. It is your grandfather’s choice who to leave the money to, and it certainly is not your job to pressure him to do anything.”

Do you agree with OP’s decision? What advice would you give OP?
