This Redditor felt he deserved every cent of the seven-figure inheritance his parents left him. However, his disowned sister and the rest of the community think he’s being a jerk!
Getting Kicked Out
OP (Original Poster) has a sister who’s nine years older than him. However, when she was 16, and OP was 7, she got kicked out of the house when she came out to their parents.
Little to No Relationship
Given their age gap, OP and her sister were never really close. Then, their relationship got even more strained after she got kicked out and she went no contact.
OP wrote, “I was raised mostly as an only child and feel like one.”
19 Years Later
It’s been 19 years since OP’s sister was kicked out. Unfortunately, their parents recently passed away in a car rash.
Getting Everything
OP, being the only one they considered their child, got all of the inheritance. He said that it amounted to around seven figures.
It won’t allow him to stop working for the rest of his life, but it was enough to lead a comfortable lifestyle.
His Plans for the Money
OP mentioned that he missed his parents but knew they would have wanted him to live a good life. So, he first took his girlfriend on the road and bought a new RV.
He wrote, “I’ll save most of the rest of the inheritance, but I wanted to do something nice for her.”
His Sister’s Demands
Soon after, OP started receiving “angry Facebook messages” from his sister. In the messages, OP’s sister told him he “needed to give her some of his money.”
It’s Only Right
For OP’s sister, it was only right since their parents “wronged” her. She said she deserved a cut of the money OP now had.
You Owe Me!
OP said that his sister also told him that he “owed her an apology for living on the dime of h*********.”
However, OP declined everything his sister asked for.
It’s Not Yours!
He argued that he didn’t owe her anything.
OP said, “I declined, as the will is not in her name, and we are not close.”
She’s a Stranger
OP knew his sister had just given birth. So, somehow, he understood how hard it was for her.
Even so, he had no plans of giving in. He said, “You can’t expect me to give money to someone I have no rapport with.”
You’re an Enabler
Because of OP’s refusal, his sister is blasting him on Facebook. She posted something saying that OP is an “a**hole” who is “enabling” their parents.
Relatives’ Thoughts
Despite pressure from their aunt to reconsider, OP maintained his position.
OP wrote, “I get she’s struggling, but I don’t have a relationship with her, and it would be like paying out to a total stranger. Am I the a**hole?”
The Community’s Reactions
For some community members, OP is a jerk, especially with how he treated his sister.
One woman wrote, “You’re not their only child even if they pretended that you were. It really feels like there’s a lot missing between them dying and her demanding money and blasting you on Facebook. Obviously, you’ve had some contact, but considering your attitude in this post, I’m guessing your parents raised you to be exactly the type of person they were. You absolutely are not responsible for what happened when you were seven. You are responsible for your behavior and attitude now.”
Another Point of View
However, for others, OP had no responsibility toward his sister. Some even think that his sister is only reaching out for money.
One person pointed out, “She was kicked out of the house when he was seven years old. I doubt he had much idea of what was going on then at all, and he didn’t have much of a relationship with her since then. He would have had no reason to even see any interaction between his parents and his sister for the past 19 years. She also could have reached out to him at some point in the last 19 years to establish a relationship with him. She didn’t, and now she just wants money. If she’s so offended by him living off the money of h*********, by her own logic, shouldn’t she reject any of their money, too?”
Another person commented, “The sibling is not entitled to any inheritance. OP is entitled to it all if that’s what their parents left them. OP’s sister has not been in the picture until recently, based on the information we have. Why would they reach out now when money is involved? Why not try to establish a relationship years before?”
Who do you side with? Do you think OP’s sister deserves something?
