OP (Original Poster) never got along with her mom. However, she never expected her to charge her for something so unreasonable!
OP is a 23-year-old who does not get along with her mom or stepdad. Because of this, she said, “I would never willingly stay at their house except for emergencies.”
I’m Not a Monster
When she posted this story, her great-grandmother “was on her last legs.” So, her mom wanted to fly over to see her one last time.
She said, “While I don’t like my mom, I’m also not a monster like her.” So, she agreed with her mom’s request.
What She Needed to Do
While they were gone, her mom asked her to stay at their house and care for her 8-year-old brother. It was only for two weeks, and she was happy to do so, so she agreed.
Her Other Siblings
She mentioned it was the perfect arrangement since her 17-year-old brother worked all day and some nights. On the other hand, her 19-year-old sister is an “irresponsible witch of a woman like her mom.”
She didn’t trust her sister to take care of their youngest sibling. So, she agreed “under the condition that she wasn’t allowed to stay there” while OP was house sitting and babysitting.
You Need to Pay Us!
Two weeks after, her mom and stepdad came back. The moment they did, they asked OP to pay two weeks’ worth of rent.
That was equivalent to $900!
They said OP stayed at their house for two weeks, and during that time, she “took up the whole house.” Her mom said she made her sister leave for two weeks, and since they weren’t there either, OP should “pay for the rent for the time they weren’t there.”
Not Backing Down
OP was appalled, but she didn’t show any weakness. Instead, she looked them straight in the eyes and agreed.
She wrote, “I told them, ‘Sure, I’ll take it off the babysitting bill,’” Then, she said they owed her $5,820, which was $20 an hour minus the $900 they were trying to make her pay.
Tit for Tat
No matter what, OP refused to pay rent for watching her brother and staying at their house to do so.
She said, “I might be the a**hole since I played the tit-for-tat game and said they owe me money instead.”
The Community’s Suggestions
People say that OP’s response was absolutely perfect!
A Redditor said, “Not the a**hole. That’s absolutely a perfect response. You even gave them a deal—you didn’t charge for house cleaning and cooking!”
To this, OP responded, “Yep, also taking care of their dogs, walking them, taking care of their 12 birds, tutoring my brother, at one point, dealing with a snake. And also not to mention my little brother has autism, so makes it that he has more needs than other children. Also, taking care of my mom’s garden.”
Other users suggested OP bring up the price if her mom still insisted on her paying rent.
“If they complain and push it, put your rates up to include looking after the animals and paying the snake catcher,” said one Redditor. Another said, “So basically, you were the pet and house sitter and childcare provider for a special needs child. They definitely owe you money.”
Some users called OP’s mom and stepdad out for trying to take advantage of her.
This Redditor noted, “You did them a favor, and they want to charge you for it? Unbelievable. Not the a**hole.” Another said, “I guess they’re welcome to talk to their landlord about no rent due for the two weeks they weren’t using the house. I’m sure that would go over well for them! Not the a**hole, by the way!”
We Understand You!
With how her mom and stepdad acted, Redditors also understood why OP doesn’t get along with them.
“The sister not being there was a condition of ’employment.’ And the house was also used to house the son. They certainly have a lot of gall to try to charge you when they asked you to perform the babysitting. No wonder you don’t get along with them,” said one user. A man noted, “No wonder OP has little contact. With a family like that, who needs enemies?”
They Are Insane
People also noted how appalled they were with how OP’s mom treated her. They were asking for a favor, and instead of being thankful, they even tried to charge her hundreds of dollars!
This Redditor wrote, “Not the a**hole. Power move, in my opinion. They asked you for a favor and tried to charge you for it? The audacity!” Another exclaimed, “Not the a**hole! You were doing her a favor. You wouldn’t have been there if she didn’t ask you to go.”
What do you think of OP’s situation? Do you have any advice?
