One and Only Child
OP (Original Poster) married her college sweetheart over two years ago and immediately got their prayers answered when they decided they would start trying for a baby. She gave birth to her one and only daughter, Stori, in October 20222.
Her Relationship With Her Mother-In-Law
She mentioned that she had always had a great relationship with her in-laws, who supported her all this time. Her parents passed away when she was 15 due to a car wreck, so her grandparents have been raising her ever since.
OP shared, “My mother-in-law and I have always had the best relationship. She was there for me through my entire pregnancy; it was going to be her first and only grandkid because my brother-in-law and sister-in-law don’t want any kids, and me and my husband only want one kid.”
Her Dream
Since OP was a kid, she had dreamed of naming her child after either of her parents. She wrote, “I’ve said if I had a daughter, she would have my mom’s middle name, and if I had a son, he would have my dad’s middle name.”
OP and her husband soon found out they were having a daughter, so she’d get OP’s mom’s middle name—Noelle. Her mother-in-law was happy and excited about her granddaughter’s name—or so OP thought!
The Baby’s Coming!
Two months after they learned about the gender, OP went into labor at work, so her colleague brought her to the hospital, where her husband and mother-in-law waited for her. She wanted her mother-in-law to be in the same room because she was “her second support person.”
OP said everything was going well until they found out she wasn’t dilating. Because of this, she had to have an emergency C-section.
The Birth of a Baby Girl
Twenty minutes later, OP and her husband had a beautiful and healthy daughter. After the procedure, OP was tired and not feeling well, so she decided to rest while her husband went home to grab some things.
Her mother-in-law stayed with her to look after Stori while she napped.
Are You Changing Her Name
After a short while had passed, OP was woken by a nurse. She said, “Sorry to wake you, but I heard you expressed concerns about changing your daughter’s middle name.”
OP was shocked and dumbfounded, so she asked the nurse, “Ma’am, what are you talking about?” Before the nurse could answer, her mother-in-law jumped in to say, “Well, I just thought since I’ve been the one that’s been here and supporting you that she should have my middle name.”
Ignoring Her Wishes
OP couldn’t think of anything else; she was confused and didn’t know what to do. Then, her mother-in-law said, “Well, she’s not even here to support you, so what sense does that make?”
At this point, OP started crying because what her mother-in-law said hurt her. She said, “My mom was the best mom anybody could ever ask for; I miss her dearly every single day. She would have been the best grandmother to my daughter.”
Kicking Her Out
She had had enough, so she kicked her mother-in-law out of the hospital. OP told her to “get out and don’t come back.”
OP told her mother-in-law she couldn’t believe she said something like that when she knew her mom was dead. Her mother-in-law eventually left, and OP immediately called her husband to tell him what his mom had done.
How Could She Do That?
Her husband was shocked and didn’t believe OP initially and said that his mom wasn’t that kind of person. When he returned to the hospital, the nurses confirmed OP’s story.
So, her husband apologized to her, hugged her, and said, “That must have been hard to hear.”
Angry In-Laws
When they were discharged two days later, OP received texts from her brother-in-law and sister-in-law stating that she was wrong to kick their mom out of the hospital when “all she was trying to do was make her more comfortable.” Her sister-in-law even told her, “If you ever call my mother a b***h again, you won’t be alive to raise your daughter.”
It was clear to OP that her mother-in-law manipulated the two and fabricated the story. She was so shocked that her husband grabbed the phone and told his siblings what really happened and “cursed them out really badly.”
Apologies
They immediately apologized to OP; her sister-in-law also started crying because of what she said.
OP forgave her even though she was furious because she would feel the same way if someone insulted or berated her mom or grandmother.
Meeting Their Niece
Three days after their conversation, OP’s sister-in-law and brother-in-law came over to meet their niece. She noted it was a “lovely and beautiful sight to see.”
However, 30 minutes later, her mother-in-law pulled up unannounced, and OP quickly grabbed her baby and went upstairs. Her husband told them, “She’s not allowed here or around our baby until my wife is comfortable.”
Causing a Scene
Upon hearing what her son said, OP’s mother-in-law started causing a scene at their front door. Eventually, her sister-in-law and brother-in-law calmed her down, and they left; the two apologized to OP and her husband.
Cutting off All Contact
The issue didn’t stop there, though. OP shared, “Ever since then, the rude text messages and phone calls didn’t stop, even texts about my mom. So that’s when I cut off all contact with her.”
OP told her husband she would never ask him to stop talking to his mom, but she was done. Her husband replied, “I love you; I love our daughter;” he said this is his family now, and he will do whatever it takes to protect it.
Taking Sides
Most of OP’s friends and her grandmother took her side. They said she wasn’t wrong and were proud of her for standing her ground.
However, she was surprised when she found out her best friend was against what she did. She was told she was wrong for going about it this way since her daughter would be her mother-in-law’s only grandchild.

She Was Manipulative
Redditors also pointed out that her mother-in-law was manipulative and tried to fabricate the story of what happened.
“Don’t forget that she was telling everyone her version of what happened,” wrote one Redditor. Another said, “Protect yourself and your child. She tried making major life decisions for your child whilst you were unconscious and vulnerable. She thought she could manipulate the situation to her advantage. I don’t want to imagine what she would do next. She was being nice because she wanted to have control. Anyone that supports the mother-in-law is freaking toxic and gross.”
