This Redditor couldn’t understand why his boss was so against him taking a vacation when his colleagues had no issues with him taking a break. Should he risk his job and go for it?
Well-Deserved Birthday Trip

OP (Original Poster) is going on a trip to celebrate his birthday in a couple of months. He said he would be going to Europe, so it would make sense to go for seven to nine days.
Application Denied

However, his boss did not approve his vacation request, saying he couldn’t go for more than five business days. He said it would be “unfair” to OP’s colleagues.
I Don’t Understand!

However, OP was confused and didn’t understand how two days would make much difference. He’d also already asked his colleagues about what they thought about his time away, and no one had an issue with the duration of his trip or the time it would happen.
Reasons He Could Go

He also made it a point to mention that they were fully staffed during the time he scheduled the trip. OP said, “It’s actually very slow in the office, as it was also slow last year.”
He Was Insistent

Even so, OP’s boss “threw a whole fit” and reiterated that it would be unfair to everyone else if he took “so many days off.”
In return, OP noted, “I said I don’t get how that matters as plenty of people have gone on vacation, and a lot of people in the office have gone away at the same time.”
His Options or Lack Thereof

OP really wants to push through with his vacation. However, he said he “can’t afford to quit right now.”
Backup Plans

With that, OP plans to look for any small job and “take whatever.” He said, “If not, I will not be going back there after that trip.”
Simply Ridiculous

OP was fed up with how things were being handled.
He wrote, “I work 40 hours a week. How is a week and some change going to affect the job? These companies are ridiculous.”
What People Have to Say

People believed his boss was just jealous he would be doing something exciting.
“The boss was just envious,” commented one user. Another said, “If I don’t get to go to Europe for two weeks, nobody gets to go to Europe for two weeks! Waaaah!”
Bad Company Culture

Some users also mentioned that OP’s boss probably thought that the company paid him too much if he could afford to go to Europe.
A man shared his experiences and said, “‘If you can afford to travel, we’re paying you too much!’ I worked for a guy like that: if his employees did pretty much anything that he did—going out for dinner or whatever—he would bluster about it.”
What Is Wrong With People?

Redditors also couldn’t understand why other people just can’t be happy for others.
One noted, “What happened to being happy for others and living vicariously through them? Honestly, I wanna hear as much as my co-workers are willing to share, and I am following their social media updates because I wanna feel like I went there, too!” Another user wrote, “Being happy for others? That went out of Vogue back in 2008.”
People Are Just Selfish

Other users also shared their experiences working for or with someone selfish.
A man said, “Worked for a guy who’d get p***y if he realized one of his employees could afford to eat someplace he liked. One day our crew had a few guys eating at some Mexican restaurant pretty close to the office when he came in with a couple of office personnel to eat. Next Monday, during the regular safety meeting, he announced we weren’t allowed to eat at a ‘sit-down restaurant’ during work hours. He claimed it made the company look bad somehow.”
You’ll Get Targeted!

Some people also shared the sad fact that if some people tried to go on vacation, they would probably lose their job soon.
This person said, “I had a b***-kisser, yes-man boss one time tell me I could not take two weeks off for a large, once-a-decade family reunion out of the country at my grandmother’s house. Well, if you can be gone more than a week, then you really are not needed then. And you will get targeted in the next layoff. And then something about people not usually using all their vacation time. It was a use-it-or-lose-it policy, with no cash-out or rollover. But of course, he used all his vacation days.”
No Room for Loyalty

Redditors also noted that, unfortunately, loyalty to a company didn’t mean anything these days.
One shared, “Honestly, this is the only way now. If they’re being unreasonable, just start looking for a new job and bounce. Loyalty means squat these days.”
What do you think of OP’s predicament? Do you think he should continue with his plans?
