This Redditor had always avoided his aunt because of her harsh and snide comments. But when his mom invited her behind his back to his wedding, he lost his cool and kicked her out!
Tied the Knot
OP (Original Poster) and his wife have been in a relationship for six years. They got married in June of 2022 and had been married for three months when this story was posted.
Acquainted With the Family
He explained that throughout their years together, OP’s wife had met most of his family.
His parents and other relatives welcomed her with open arms. Unfortunately, his 59-year-old aunt is an entirely different case.
Insensitive and Judgmental Glances
OP shared that his aunt had always given his wife the “stink eye,” even on the first day they met.
He explained that his aunt is the “most religious, deeply conservative, ‘holier-than-thou’ person” one could ever meet. And because of this and how he treated his wife when they first met, he’d learned to avoid her and what she says.
A Much-Needed Warning
He gave his wife, then-girlfriend, the same warning all those years ago. OP told her she should avoid his aunt “at all costs.”
Without further explanation, she just agreed with OP; therefore, the couple had no significant issues or altercations with OP’s aunt in the past.
Caught in the Middle of the Pandemic
When the pandemic started, both OP and his wife lost their jobs. They worked in the hotel and restaurant industry and had no chance of finding another job at that point.
So, they decided to take on online freelance jobs, which led them to gain weight.
Starting Anew
In 2022, OP and his wife decided to start their own business and move back to OP’s hometown, which was 900 miles away from the city.
However, before starting, he wanted to marry her first. So, he proposed, she said yes, and they started planning a small and intimate wedding.
Getting Bigger and Bigger
The couple initially planned to have only nine guests.
He said, “We made plans, and initially, it was just me and relatives—aunt not invited. But you know how the parents are. From a small party of 9, it became 50.”
Wedding Crasher
On the day of their wedding, everything was going great. That is until OP suddenly caught sight of his aunt.
It turns out that OP’s mom went behind his back and invited his aunt without telling him. He prepared for the worst because he knew how she’ll behave, but he forgot to tell his wife about her; he said, “‘At least she was five tables away,’ I said to myself.”
Spouting Insults
OP didn’t expect that her sitting five tables away wasn’t as far as he initially thought it was.
OP wrote, “The entire time, she was loud about how we both gained weight and then proceeded to go to the in-laws’ table and then talked—to make sure my wife hears—about, ‘It’s the wife’s duties to take care about the husband’s health,’ and ‘If my husband was sent to the hospital for his health, I could find a new man,’ also, ‘If you let yourself go, then you failed as a wife,’ and a whole lot of crap about religion.”
Tuning Her Out
OP tuned his aunt out until he noticed his wife “shaking.” He immediately asked her what was wrong, and she said, “I can’t take this!”
It turns out that OP didn’t notice that his aunt was no longer at her table and is instead tormenting his in-laws.
You Have to Leave!
He stood up, walked over to his aunt, and yelled, “Are we really doing this right now?” Furious and unable to control his emotions, he started calling her out for what she’s been saying.
Then, OP shared, “I was about to vent out more of my frustrations on her, but finally, I was able to control myself. I then told her to leave and never speak to me, my wife, or the in-laws ever again.”
Airing Out His Frustrations
OP noted that while many of his relatives sided with him, there was a minority who said he’d gone too far and “ruined his own wedding.” Even so, OP doesn’t see anything wrong with how he acted.
He said, “I felt that I did nothing wrong, I was just defending my wife, and it was a bonus that I released some of my childhood frustrations at my aunt in the process.” OP added that his in-laws also backed him up after his face-off with his aunt, saying he did the right thing.
The Community’s Two Cents
Though people were appalled by OP’s aunt’s actions, many focused on OP’s mom’s mistake and said she’s the real villain in this story.
“Not the a**hole, and Mom was out of line inviting her to your guest list for your wedding,” said a top commenter.
Another agreed, saying, “This. This is 100% on your mom. Not the a**hole. That said, be very careful about your mom’s relationship with your wife. Make your mom understand that her actions destroyed what should have been a happy day, and your aunt is never to be invited to your events without clearing it with you first.”
It’s Her Own Fault!
Some Redditors also reassured OP that his reaction was natural and understandable. It was OP’s aunt’s own fault after the stunt she pulled.
This Redditor pointed out, “Not the a**hole. Horrible people act that way because people who aren’t horrible don’t call them out. Good on ya. There’s a line in Yeats’s Second Coming about how the worst are full of righteous certainty and the best are full of doubt. Don’t doubt yourself.”
One person shared, “You defended your partner and refused to allow abusive behavior to continue. Good job. If anyone is to be blamed for ‘ruining’ the wedding, come on, that person is obviously your aunt.”
How would you react if you were a guest at OP’s wedding? What would you tell OP’s aunt?
