This Redditor is a dad who tried to provide his kids with everything they could ever need. So, when their son suddenly shunned them and uninvited them from his wedding, he blew up!
A House in Pennsylvania

OP (Original Poster) and his wife bought a four-bedroom house in Pennsylvania that their son lives in.
He wanted to stay in the area since he went to college in the same state. So, to support their son, OP and his wife bought the house as a second home.
Primary Residence

He explained that they lived in New Jersey and commuted to Manhattan for work.
OP wrote, “We figured that he would have a place to live, and we could visit every so often and spend some quality time together.”
The House Is Ours

In all senses of the word, the house in Pennsylvania was OP’s and his wife’s. They paid for the taxes, services, and maintenance.
Meanwhile, their son paid for his groceries and utilities.
Meeting His Partner

The arrangement was going well for everyone until their son met a girl, and started seeing each other seriously.
OP wrote, “They announce their engagement, and she moves into the house with our son.”
Meeting the In-Laws

After the announcement, OP’s family held a little “get to know you barbeque” at their Pennsylvania house.
He wrote, “My son and daughter are there, as are our son’s fiancé and her parents and sisters.”
A Serious Conversation

Everyone seemed to be getting along well. At some point, OP’s wife, daughter, son, and his fiancé’s family, apart from OP’s future daughter-in-law’s dad, went into the house.
However, a few minutes later, OP spotted his wife and daughter coming out, looking really upset. They approached OP and said they should leave and drive back to New Jersey.
What’s Going On?

OP didn’t understand what was happening, but only when they got back to New Jersey did his wife and daughter calm down enough to tell him what had happened.
OP said, “They tell me that our son and his fiancé, along with her family, don’t want us at the wedding. According to what I was told, ‘We’re not their kind of people.’”
Boiling Mad

He immediately got mad and called his son to ask what was happening. His son then told him that his fiancé’s family felt they “were not good enough” and would only “embarrass them” during the wedding.
Therefore, his son uninvited OP, his mom, and his sister!
Face-To-Face Conversation

OP gave himself a week to calm himself down. Then, he drove back to Pennsylvania and saw that his future in-laws had already moved into his house!
They confronted OP and asked him what he was doing there. Then, OP said that since his family wasn’t invited to the wedding, he came to talk to his son.
Conflict Between In-Laws

However, OP’s future in-laws dared to tell OP to leave “their” house. Because of this, OP “lost it!”
He told them that they had 30 days to get out of his house and tell his son that he was selling the house and he could find somewhere else with his new family. OP wrote, “I go to a realtor in town and list the house for sale.”
Was His Son the Owner?

They then called OP’s son at work to tell him what OP said. He wrote, “Apparently, they thought he owned the house.”
His son then contacted him and asked why OP was selling “his” house.
It’s Not Yours!

OP reminded his son that the house wasn’t his. He wrote, “I tell him I paid for it along with the taxes on it, and it is mine.”
Living Rent-Free

He told his son that though he felt he owned the house, he didn’t. He was only living there “rent-free.”
OP added, “Since he doesn’t want us in his new life, he has to get out. I tell him the same as I told his future in-laws—they have 30 days to get out, then I’ll get a lawyer and get them evicted.”
His Thoughts

Now he’s asking whether he was being an a**hole for taking such a hard stance on the issue.
OP said he was his son, but it seemed that his future in-laws had “taken over” and his family “no longer counted.”
Insights From Redditors

Redditors couldn’t believe how OP’s son and in-laws acted.
A top commenter wrote, “Not the a**hole. And I want an update on this because it sounds nuts. What kind of people do they think you are? How was your son okay with excluding his whole family? Do you think your son’s been brainwashed by his fiancé? How did he think the house was ‘his’ when he didn’t pay the taxes on it? So many questions.” Another user said, “To be honest, it sounds like fiancé and her family are f****** grifters. Who goes straight from engagement to your inexplicably hostile in-laws freeloading off of their son-in-law?”
What do you have to say? What do you think of this issue?
