When this Redditor inherited a life-changing sum, he made a smart choice and invested his money. However, his siblings didn’t do the same and used everything up! Should he share his money with them?
A Child of a Blended Family
OP (Original Poster) is a child of a blended family. As a result, he had full siblings and half-siblings.
His mom loved all her kids equally, even her non-biological children.
Parents’ Passing
So, when OP’s parents died, the inheritance was split evenly between all their kids. He said the amount was “nothing to sneeze at.”
After all, they all got approximately $2,000,000 each!
Unexpected Surprise
To OP, the money he received was a “nice bonus,” which none of them expected. He had always thought his parents lived paycheck to paycheck because it’s how they raised all their kids.
Setting Himself Up
When he got the money, he went to an accountant and a lawyer to set himself up for the future.
He shared, “I set myself up, paid off my mortgage, bought investment properties and a share account. I did spend some money upgrading my car, on renovations of my house, a small tractor, and purchased a horse that was four times more than I would even spend but love competing her, but the rest has been invested.”
Changing His Lifestyle
OP also started working part-time to have some “me time.” However, he hardly touched the rest of the money he saved.
He said he relies on his wage; all dividends or rental income are invested.
Plans for the Future
One of OP’s goals is to retire early so he can enjoy life. He doesn’t want to work till the day he dies!
His Relationship With His Siblings
OP shared that he “doesn’t have much to do” with his siblings.
He said, “When Mom and Dad were in care, they moved in with me, and I did everything with the help of carers.”
Two Years Later
Even so, two years after they received their inheritance, one of his siblings came to visit and was surprised that OP had “so much stuff.” On the flip side, OP was aware that his siblings had effectively “blown their money.”
He shared, “One even went to an overseas country and lived like a king for a few years, and all of them are at least back in debt, or even some had to sell their home and get loans to survive.”
You Should Share!
The sibling who visited OP then suggested that he divide the rest of “their inheritance.” OP’s siblings believed they had a right to the funds OP grew, but obviously, OP declined.
However, he had been getting numerous bills from the others, asking him to “help” them pay for things.
What to Do?
So far, OP is trying to remain firm and tell them no. However, he’s now dealing with extended family pressuring him to help.
Should He Help?
OP reiterated that they had all received the same amount, but he was the only one still working out of all the siblings. Their requests have been consistent, and OP is considering whether he should give in and help one of his siblings, who is about to get kicked out of the house.
Why Is It His Responsibility?
Even so, OP feels it was unfair. Aside from them getting the same amount, his siblings never helped with caring for their parents.
He said, “I did end-of-life care, and it was crickets from all of them, so not sure why they should now get a free ride now.”
Child-Free
One of his siblings’ qualms with OP is that he is child-free and would leave his estate to a family friend’s kids or people who supported him—not his siblings.
OP believed he did the right thing, but he’s also starting to worry if he was wrong. He asked, “Maybe I am wrong? Maybe I should help? I know at least one sibling will end up homeless and has asked to come and stay at my house, but I really don’t want this.”
Redditors’ Reactions
Members of the community are proud of OP for doing the right thing. Thus, they believed that his siblings had no right to take away what was his.
“You were smart with your money, and they were stupid with it. They’re jealous you built the brick house, and the wolf blew down their straw house. Don’t let them in. Not the a**hole,” said one user. Another said, “Not the a**hole. Absolutely not in any way. If they did get the chance to spend all of your money, what then? They have shown themselves to be irresponsible and now need to live with the consequences.”
It’s Their Choice and Responsibility
People reminded OP that spending money on luxurious items like overseas trips was his siblings’ choice. So, he wasn’t responsible for their needs now.
One Redditor said, “Not the a**hole. If they decided to throw it all away, that’s for them to fix, not come to you begging for handouts because the minute you do it, they’ll all be constantly badgering you for more. It would be even worse if you did for the one about to be homeless but none of the others. Block them all and move on. They’ve made their bed; let them lie in it.”
What should OP do? Do you think his siblings have any right to his money?
