This bride-to-be saw red when she found out her future mother-in-law sneakily tried to ruin her wedding, so she uninvited her from her big day. Redditors are on board with her decision!
Troubled Waters
OP (Original Poster) and her future mother-in-law never saw eye to eye, and she’s “never been a fan of hers” throughout her relationship with her fiancé. They’ve already been together for four years!
She said, “I’m honestly not sure why it is that she’s always disliked me and been cold to me, but after multiple attempts over the years to build some type of relationship with her, nothing has worked.”
Acting Like She Was in Charge
Her mother-in-law-to-be never cared about anything involving OP until they started wedding planning. She said she and her fiancé were paying for most of the wedding, but her dad and stepmom would also be contributing a bit.
On the other hand, her future mother-in-law and father-in-law aren’t contributing anything at all. Even so, she said, “Mother-in-law is giving her opinion on things as if she’s footing the bill.”
Never-Ending Instructions
OP was getting frustrated because it seemed her mother-in-law-to-be was trying to control everything about the wedding.
She said she was saying things like, “You should make the themes this color, make sure you have this dish on the menu to be served, don’t do an open bar; you don’t want people being too rowdy, make sure me, my sister, and cousin are sitting front row at the wedding ceremony,” and more.
Shutting Her Down
OP and her fiancé are sick of her future mother-in-law hovering over them. So, every time she tried to give an opinion, they politely shut it down and told her they had things under control.
Unfortunately, per OP, “she just never gets the hint!”
Being Considerate
OP didn’t want her to feel left out. So, before she became a “nightmare,” OP invited her to go dress shopping with her.
Her Dream Wedding Dress
A couple of weeks before this story was posted, OP went dress-shopping with her mom, close friends, and future mother-in-law. She found her dream wedding dress!
She shared, “I have a curvy hourglass figure, and I found a dress that shows off my figure perfectly and makes me feel gorgeous. The dress is kind of revealing—low cut on the chest and mermaid style—but it’s nothing I’d be ashamed of my family and friends seeing me in.”
She Hated It!
While everyone else supported OP’s decision, her mother-in-law-to-be absolutely hated her dress choice, and she made sure to express her opinions to OP multiple times.
OP said, “She even went as far as to say, ‘This is a wedding, not a strip club; I don’t like it.’” She didn’t listen to her and bought the dress anyway; she was paying for it, after all.
Unexpected Call
The night this story was posted, OP and her fiancé were cleaning up after dinner when she received a call from the shop where she ordered her wedding dress.
The staff were calling her because they were concerned about something. OP shared, “Apparently, a lady—my mother-in-law—called them pretending to be me and wanted to switch the dress I chose to a more appropriate dress.”
A Necessary Confirmation
During the phone call, the sales associate realized that it wasn’t OP’s phone number that called to “make the change.” So, she immediately reached out to OP to confirm before they changed the order.
Raging Mad
OP and her fiancé were both livid. He’d heard the entire conversation, so he called his mom to confront her about it.
Denials and Confessions
After denying what she did multiple times, OP’s mother-in-law-to-be finally admitted what she did.
OP shared, “I told her if she’s so bothered by my dress to consider herself uninvited from the wedding and hung up on her.”
Standing Her Ground
Since that happened, OP’s future mother-in-law has been trying to get a hold of her and her fiancé nonstop. She tried to defend herself, but OP had had enough.
Feeling Bad
She really doesn’t want her future mother-in-law to be at her wedding. However, OP also feels terrible for her fiancé because he wouldn’t get to dance with his mom like he originally planned.
OP asked, “Did I take it too far?”
The Community’s Pieces of Advice
Redditorts believed OP didn’t do anything wrong, but she had to ensure that she and her husband were on the same page.
A woman shared, “Not the a**hole. I would have done the same thing. But you and your fiancé need to be in lockstep on this. So if he starts hedging, don’t go through with the wedding until you are both on the same page. You need to get these boundaries in place now because your mother-in-law will be a nightmare if you have kids if you don’t.”
He’s Supporting Her
One Redditor also pointed out that OP seemed to have a supportive partner, which was important since they were getting married.
He said, “OP stated her husband was equally put off by the attitude and spoke to her about the dress stunt. Sounds like a supportive significant other.”
Don’t Burn Every Bridge
Some Redditors advised OP to try to find a middle ground or compromise instead.
“This is probably taking it a step too far. There are entirely reasonable stances to take, and trying to find a middle ground in most things is one of the big keys to a happy life. Yes, the mother-in-law has completely overstepped OP’s boundaries, but there is definitely a way to agree with the fact that the mother-in-law overstepped boundaries while also trying to work out a solution that works for everyone. Not every bridge has to be burned, and not every single decision can possibly be made in complete harmony,” one man commented.
Was OP too harsh? What should the couple do?
