This Redditor’s best friend’s soon-to-be husband told her that her best friend was behind her and her ex-boyfriend’s break up. So, she walked away from her wedding and left them to deal with the mess!
Left Blindsided
A year before this story was posted, OP (Original Poster) was seriously dating her ex-boyfriend, John. They’d been together for four years and were starting to plan for their future.
OP and John were at the point of talking about their wedding, having kids, and more. They were “pretty happy,” so she was left blindsided when John suddenly dumped her the year before this story was shared.
It’s Not You, It’s Me
OP tried to get to the bottom of things to figure out what went wrong. However, John just said that it was “personal,” and OP should respect his space and decision.
Her Rock and Armor
During this time, OP’s best friend, Stacy, and her fiancé, Tom, were OP’s rocks. They let OP crash at their place, and they were “overwhelmingly supportive and loving.”
What an Honor!
Stacy then asked OP to be her maid of honor, and it was no surprise due to their close relationship. It was a no-brainer for OP, and she “happily” took on the task.
Unexpected Breakfast Date
Everything was going well until the morning of the wedding. Hours before Stacy and Tom were to say their vows, Tom asked OP to meet him for breakfast “super early” in the morning before all the festivities.
She wrote, “I thought it was weird but assumed he maybe wanted me to pass something on to Stacy.”
A Fresh Start
Well, what happened wasn’t anything close to what OP had expected. Tom told her that a few days before the wedding, Stacy admitted that she had an affair with John, ultimately leading to OP and John’s breakup.
OP shared, “He said that Stacy wanted to come clean to ‘start their marriage fresh’ and that he was forgiving her to move forward.”
Tom’s Indecisiveness
Tom admitted that he had a hard time deciding if he’d tell OP or not. He had “gone back and forth between telling her” and finally decided to “spill the beans.”
An Unexpected Reaction
OP noted that she believed Tom expected her to forgive Stacy as he did because the affair was “so long ago.”
However, the exact opposite of Tom’s expectations happened, and OP walked out on the wedding.
Say Goodbye to the Pillar of Your Wedding!
With OP boycotting Stacy’s wedding, everything ended up being a “huge mess.” After all, she was running the whole show.
OP said, “Stacy made me do everything, so she didn’t even know what was happening at certain times or who to call.”
Missing Person for the Day
Apart from that, all the guests soon realized Stacy’s maid of honor was missing, as she had “headshots and bios” of the entourage on her wedding page.
A Not-So-Secret Affair
After this, everyone at the wedding eventually learned about Stacy’s affair with John. OP didn’t even have to say anything, as Stacy’s cousin knew John and what had happened between them!
Online Slander
Since then, Stacy and Tom have been “slandering” OP online, saying she “ruined their once-in-a-lifetime moment.”
Some of the couple’s friends are on their side, saying OP should have handled everything “more privately.” They also said OP should have at least stuck around during the wedding since everything was so last minute.
Down the Road of Guilt
OP was so hurt by what she had learned, and she didn’t know what Tom expected.
She wrote, “Either way, I’ve been getting bombarded with texts, and I heard that Stacy has been so upset she’s had to take time off work, which does make me feel like an a**hole. Especially since I’ve just been ignoring her calls.”
Redditors’ Opinions
For users, though walking out of the wedding wasn’t the nicest thing to do, OP’s actions were completely understandable.
A top commenter wrote, “Hard not the a**hole on this one. Was walking out of the wedding the day of a nice thing to do? Not particularly. But what on Earth did they expect would happen by telling you? And on the wedding day. They knew they were playing with fire. They choose when to tell you this information. Simply walking out—because whoa, Nelly, I bet there were a ton of conflicting emotions—was pretty adult. You didn’t cause a huge scene. You simply extricated yourself from the situation. Not the a**hole.”
Another Redditor said, “Not the a**hole. The whole day was ruined because Stacey is a cheat and Tom is pathetic. Why would you marry a cheat? Once a cheater, always a cheater. And to cheat with your ‘best friend’s’ boyfriend? And then let her move in; she watches her grieve like they did nothing to cause the pain. And the audacity of both of them going after OP. They are embarrassed that people now know Stacey is a cheater and Tom is the pathetic loser who has no self-respect.”
Better Yet, Do This!
Some users also suggested OP went the petty route—acting like nothing ever happened and then striking Stacy down when the speech by the maid of honor came around.
“I would have pretended to forgive her and then given a hell of a maid of honor speech, but I’m petty like that,” said one Redditor.
Another wrote, “Right as she’s about to walk down the aisle, ‘And here is the woman that ruined my previous relationship by cheating on her soon-to-be husband.’ Mic drop, grab a bottle of bubbles, and walk out.”
Should OP have given Stacy a piece of her mind before walking out? Or do you think she did the right thing by leaving without a word?
