This woman needs advice after she got into a fight with her husband during their honeymoon for kicking her manipulative stepdaughter out of the ceremony. We believe her reasons are justified!
OP (Original Poster) is a 42-year-old woman who just got married four days before this story was posted. Sadly, instead of being in a state of bliss during her honeymoon, she was writing this post.
Her New Family
She shared that she’d been with her husband for four years now, and he has a daughter from a previous relationship.
Her name is Shianna, and she’s currently 19 years old.
Trying to Build a Bond
Shianna’s mom passed away when she was still young, and OP said that she had always tried to build a connection with her. However, Shianna was always very against her.
OP said, “She’s tried pinning us against each other for as long as I can remember, or she’s just not friendly to me.”
Efforts That Go Unnoticed
She tried to adjust and do things she knew Shianna enjoyed, and she also tried helping her with college tours. However, nothing worked.
OP said Shianna even spent three days at her grandmother’s house when she found out OP and her dad were getting married.
Be Part of My Big Day
Everything was going downhill until the day OP asked Shianna to be her bridesmaid.
OP shared, “Nothing seemed to work till I asked her to be my bridesmaid. She was very excited, which I was shocked by, but took this as my opportunity to bond.”
Light Blue for the Big Day
OP chose light blue for her bridesmaids’ dresses but let everyone choose their style. Her husband also paid for Shianna’s dress since she was still in college and only worked part-time.
OP’s husband was worried that she couldn’t afford an “elegant enough” dress for their wedding. She shared, “My husband was very excited about his daughter being in the wedding as well.”
Trouble in Paradise
On her wedding day, OP’s two other bridesmaids—her sister and best friend—approached her while she was getting her makeup done.
They whispered that OP had to see what Shianna was wearing, but she should stay calm so as not to ruin her big day.
Wedding Dress Dupe
OP marched down to where Shianna was and saw she wasn’t wearing the dress they had bought her. Instead, she was wearing a “white long fluffy dress” that was very similar to a wedding dress!
She asked her stepdaughter about what she was wearing. However, Shianna unapologetically said, “I liked this one better; light blue is ugly.”
You’re Out of the Entourage!
OP was seething mad and told Shianna that she didn’t match the wedding party and needed to change if she wanted to be part of the wedding. However, Shianna shook her head and said, “You can’t kick me out; my dad’s here.”
She then told Shianna that she could stay, but she would not be part of the wedding party. They argued for a few minutes, and OP finally told her to find a seat because she didn’t want her to be a bridesmaid anymore.
More Trouble Was Brewing
Shianna got angry and left. After that, OP’s husband noticed that Shianna wasn’t at the wedding and began acting weird.
OP said, “He was very cold and off the rest of the day, even after I explained what happened.”
OP shared that they were having their honeymoon at a beautiful resort in Florida, but her husband had just slept for most of the plane ride. They even had a big argument when they got to the resort about Shianna being kicked out.
She wrote, “He didn’t see the white dress and the direct defiance as big of an issue as I did.”
It turns out that Shianna had texted her dad some manipulative “bulls*** excuse” about how she didn’t think it’d be an issue and thought it’d be okay.”
OP added, “She even pointed out that I was probably worried she’d look better than me, and oh, how she didn’t wanna ruin my special day.”
As OP posted this, she said she and her husband weren’t arguing anymore. However, he was still distant, and they’d only gone out a few times because of their argument.
OP said, “I feel like maybe I should’ve just ignored the dress because now it’s ruining my honeymoon.”
Poor Judgments and Unexpected Comments
In an edit, OP mentioned that her husband had admitted that he “made a poor judgment” and planned to talk to Shianna.
OP also said that her stepdaughter somehow found the post and commented something. She said, “I have a comment from my stepdaughter, or it may be someone posing as her. I’m not using my original account, so I’m not sure how she would have found me.”
Insights From Redditors
The community wanted OP to remember that Shianna was already 19, and she probably did it deliberately.
One commented, “She tried a power play thinking you had no choice. You chose, and she lost. Sadly, you were unable to talk it out with your fiancé before the actual ceremony, so she may ultimately ‘win’ by breaking up your marriage. You and your husband need to talk this out with a professional so he can get an outside opinion. She is 19 and knew exactly what she was doing. Not the a**hole.”
People also agree with OP that her stepdaughter’s manipulative.
One said, “She never had any intentions of wearing the blue one. She used the opportunity to put a wedge between you both. Cold and calculated, and it worked.” Another wrote, “As soon as OP mentioned Shianna went from being cold to being excited when OP mentioned Shianna being a bridesmaid, I thought, ‘Oh no, she’s only excited because she wants the opportunity to ruin this wedding somehow.’ Sure enough. Not the a**hole.”
What do you think about what Shianna did? What do you have to say about how OP’s husband reacted?
