This user was adopted as a baby and has lived a happy life with her adoptive family. Then, her biological grandmother contacted her and offered her an inheritance, which her adoptive family was against!
OP (Original Poster) is a 20-year-old woman who has always known she was adopted. Her biological mother was 15 when she gave birth, and her biological father had been in his 20s.
OP’s adoptive family also has a biological daughter, a 25-year-old woman in grad school. She had some student debt built up, while OP had gotten a “full ride” to do her undergrad.
The Fateful Test
OP had taken a DNA test because she was curious about the cultures and DNA connected to her. Not only did the test screen for genetic diseases, but she also discovered she was predisposed to an allergy and came back with several matches.
A Mystery Call
The test had also included the last name of her match, but she hadn’t thought anything else about it. A little while after the trial, she got a call from a family law office, and they asked her if she “was who she claimed to be,” and spoke for a while.
OP agreed to do a Zoom meeting, and when she joined, she saw her biological grandmother. They shared the same eye color, and she could see she had her grandmother’s nose.
An Overwhelming Moment
Nothing had prepared her for what it was like to stare at someone who looked like her, and OP couldn’t help but start to cry. They chatted for a few moments before showing her the legal credentials of the law office to prove that everything was legitimate and asked her for a photo ID.
The Shocking Truth
Once the business ended, OP asked her grandmother what was happening. It turned out that her biological family had extreme wealth, and her father had been a trust-fund baby.
Her Family Drama
When her biological family found out what her father had done, they were furious, and her grandmother wanted her to have his trust fund. OP didn’t specify how much but said it was enough she could donate to charity every year and still live the rest of her life with tons of money.
Her grandmother also told OP that she had funds for her grandchildren, so she’d also get one. She told OP that her biological father was single, so losing his trust fund would only impact him, not anyone else, and she also wanted to find and compensate her birth mother.
What You Deserve
The lawyers told OP to get her lawyer and that her biological family would pay for it so she could receive what her grandmother called “the money you deserve.” OP has a family and an estate lawyer who has started to walk her through collecting the funds.
OP told her family about the situation, and they were all excited at the prospect of paying off their mortgages and student loan debt so her sister could finally be a full-time student. When she told them how the fund works and that it wouldn’t be a lump sum, they “changed their tune.”
An Unbelievable Choice
Her adoptive family wants her to say no “out of principle” because she’s part of their family. She would like to take the funds and meet her biological family, but now she’s afraid she’ll lose her adoptive family if she does.
What Redditors Have to Say
Redditors were all happy for OP, but they weren’t so pleased about the situation and the behavior of her adoptive family.
The first comment steered clear of any issues, saying, “Not the a**hole. It is a personal decision, and your biological family seems genuinely interested in connecting.”
The second most popular comment didn’t pull any punches, saying, “Not the a**hole. It’s so strange your adopted family is changing tones like this. Feels like they’re not happy for you, and if they’re not the rich ones, none of you can be.”
All up to You
It was clear to everyone that OP had a hard decision, but it was well within her rights to take the money.
One commenter put it best, saying, “You wouldn’t be the a**hole. Your family is crazy. Take the money and run. Share some if you want, but you can set yourself up for life. You need to take it.”
Why do you think OP’s family is acting so odd about the money? Should she take it, and what should she do about the attitude of her adoptive family?
