She Refused to Let Her Sister Adopt Her Baby, Adamant About Not Seeing the Child She Didn’t Want. Now Family Says She’s “Selfish and Cruel” for Only Thinking About Herself

This Redditor got pregnant unexpectedly and planned to put her child up for adoption. Her older sister wanted to adopt the baby, but she refused! Now everything’s a mess.

All Too Common

OP (Original Poster) is a 17-year-old who got pregnant accidentally. She and her boyfriend used condoms, but it failed.

Unfortunately, he left when he learned she was pregnant, leaving her to have the child alone.

Hard Choices

Due to her young age, OP decided to give her child up for adoption.

She felt this would be the best choice for herself and the unborn child since she’d be a single mother who wasn’t even out of school yet.

Wasn’t Meant to Be

Meanwhile, her 24-year-old sister had been struggling with infertility for two years and miscarried several times. She had tried in-vitro fertilization, but it failed because her body couldn’t tolerate pregnancy.

Nothing Sacred

OP is now 21 weeks pregnant and needs to go to her medical appointment for the baby. When her sister found out, she and OP’s brother-in-law were eager to go along and accompany her.

She told them she wasn’t comfortable with that. Still, they said they would really appreciate being able to “go and see if the baby is healthy and hear the baby’s heartbeat.”

OP asked why they wanted to do that because she knew they had had trouble getting over their last miscarriage.

They told OP they wanted to ensure “their kid was fine.”

Shocked to Say the Least

OP was “dumbfounded” at their response and asked them “what the f***” they were talking about.

Without warning, they told her that they would want the baby if she put her baby up for adoption. OP’s sister wanted to adopt her baby because she felt the bond would be stronger with a biological relative than an adopted child.

OP told her sister that there was no way she would give her the baby. But OP’s sister got mad and demanded to know why she would say that.

The Truth Comes Out

OP told them that she wouldn’t feel comfortable seeing the child she put up for adoption all the time. Furthermore, she didn’t want to complicate the family dynamic.

She said, “I wouldn’t feel comfortable with seeing a child who I don’t want.”

A Broken Heart

When OP finished her explanation, her sister burst into tears.

After that, her brother-in-law started screaming at her, calling her a “selfish b****” and saying she didn’t care for her sister’s feelings.

Words Can Cut Like a Knife

OP’s sister then told her she was the “worst sister and mother around.” The reason she gave was that OP would rather have random people take her baby than let her own sister adopt it.

OP had heard enough and had grown angry with her sister and brother-in-law. She told her sister that if she hadn’t been so “stuck up,” she could’ve had her own children by adoption.

Her Mother Takes a Side

After the exchange, OP told them to “f*** off” and left. Her mom, however, made it clear that she thought OP was “selfish and cruel” and should “stop thinking only about herself.”

The Community’s Two Cents

Redditors unanimously supported OP and thought her sister and brother-in-law were creepy and entitled.

One Redditor summed it up nicely, saying, “Not the a**hole. They are not entitled to your baby. And the way they assume they are is super off-putting.”

Another pointed out, “Please don’t let your verbally abusive and emotionally manipulative sister have your baby. Please. The same rage your sister directed at you would eventually be directed toward your child. Find the best home possible for your baby, and good luck to you. Not the a**hole.”

A Brutal Situation to Be In

No one would envy OP being in this position and having to give up her baby for adoption. But for Redditors, OP should stand her ground and not give in to her sister, brother-in-law, and mom’s tactics.

Many noted that her sister was displaying some disturbing behavior, saying, “Not the a**hole. No way would I let them adopt that baby. Nope and nope.”

Other Redditors agreed, with one saying, “Not the a**hole. I wouldn’t give them the baby. This screaming and yelling at you showed how they are. And I understand your reason why you wouldn’t want to see that child again and again.”

What do you think? Was OP right to not want the baby to go to her sister, or should she have let her sister adopt the kid?
